I need several books to get me through my kid’s upcoming surgeries.
Crazy Rich Asians was great for doctors’ waiting rooms. I need more like that (and yes, I’ve read the sequels). I don’t like romance or formulaic reunion-at-the-beach books. Nothing too close to home (no PTA disfunction, no sick children). Definitely no thriller/murder mystery. I do love a book that moves quickly. Suggestions, please? |
| I always lean towards YA for stuff like that, OP. Even if it's dark, there's always a message of hope and I'm not left frustrated as is the case with a lot of adult fiction. |

I surprisingly enjoyed Holly Madison's memoir about her time with Hugh Heffner: Down the Rabbit Hole.
Also, some of the books by comedians have been good - Amy Poehler, Tina Fay, Sarah Silverman, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Chelsea Handler, etc. |
+1. I read Jandy Nelson's I'll Give You the Sun and loved it. |
| Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend! I also loved Where'd You Go Bernadette, though there is some of what you'd classify as PTA dysfunction. |
| I really liked Big Law by Lindsay Cameron |
|
Anything Ken Follett I finds moves quickly and is interesting (Pillars of the Earth, Fall of Giants - both first books in a trilogy) . I've loved all of Curtis Sittenfeld's books which are well written but not too heavy -- Prep, An American Wife, Sisterland, Eligible.
Thinking of you and your son. Best wishes that all goes well and he's okay. |

Mr Penumbra's 24-hour bookstore
Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman (especially since series about to debut on Amazon Prime) |
+2 The Rangers Apprentice Series is great In adult fiction, I'm loving The Chronicles of St. Mary's. The first book is Just One Damn Thing After Another https://www.amazon.com/Just-Damned-Thing-After-Another/dp/1597808687 |

Maybe not quite what you are looking for but I enjoy Fiona Davis's books (The Address, The Dollhouse, another one).
A light, historical read but there is usually mystery involved (nothing too heavy). Good luck with your chid's surgeries! |
| I know this isn’t what you asked for, but have you thought about getting an adult coloring book? When my kid was having some procedures, I just couldn’t think, but coloring gave me something to do with my hands and was easy to pick up, put down. |
BEST!!! OP, must read! |
|
Op, I am a very sensitive person.
Read When Life Gives you Lululemons! I loved it. And my sister in law read it while she was hospitalized for cancer complications and loved it also.

I think that an adult coloring book is a great idea. For many reasons too!
