These are real families with kids who were in MVA for various reasons, but they all absolutely thrived. If you are an MVA teacher reading this, thank you for your amazing work. What happened is so terribly sad, but you have truly touched those kids' hearts and changed their lives.


So where do we draw the line? Serving 800 students is too expensive when the cohort includes the kids who are using MVA because it’s a nice option for them. Do we add some sort of medical criteria to make sure the kids who truly need it get it and we don’t spend money on a virtual program for kids who should be back in-person?


That would be a good approach, in my opinion. It's important to understand that while some families may have used MVA for convenience, the VAST MAJORITY were there out of absolute necessity.

That would be one reasonable way of handling it. Certainly better then what MCPS did to these kids.


Yes - it would be awful for the kids with real medical issues to go from MVA 5-day, all day learning, to 4 hours of instruction a week under IIS because the MVA program is bloated with kids who don’t need it and drive the cost of the program way up. It’s maybe too late for this kind of nuanced solution, but it seems to be a good fix that may end up being a wash when you measure the cost of educating these truly high-need kids under a combo of IIS or private virtual options funded by the county.

Making it smaller would make it even more expensive on a per pupil basis. And give it fewer stakeholders.

It's unfortunate because there really are a small number of kids that would benefit from virtual. But the MVA supporters weren't interested in coming up with a workable solution targeted at those kids.


The solution is to keep the mva. It’s not up to the supporters, it’s up to mcps. It’s cheaper per student. Several other counties just restored their programs.

Then you can pay for a private program that will work better for your child, or move to a state with a public virtual option. Look, I do have empathy for your position, because we ended up enrolling my oldest in private school for several years, and yes, I was frustrated that the best option for him ended up costing $$$ we weren’t planning on. But we did what we had to do. Parents have to make tough choices about schooling all the time, including moving to a new district or downsizing/taking an extra job to pay for private.

We keep having the same discussion here, but MCPS probably should have cut off the "I don't want my kids to learn about Nike Airs" folks a long time ago, along with the "we like to travel" folks. It just can't be the job of a public school system to service the individual preferences of specific families, particularly when that individual preference is for a 10:1 student to teacher ratio that no one else in the district can access.

That leaves the kids with medical/disability reasons. It's hard. The law dictates access to a free and appropriate public education, but not necessary the exact situation that an individual family might want. So, families would need to make the case that there is no program in the vast ecosystem of MCPS programs that meets the need of their individual child.

Sad that these politicians are playing a game of CYA by sending letters about things they know can't change. What's Felder going to do? Have the BOE re-vote on the budget? Here is what I would like my state reps to do: Either fully fund Maryland's Blueprint for Education, or repeal it. If we thought the budget cuts were painful this year, wait until free pre-k kicks in for our school district. We don't have the physical school capacity or money for the personnel for the Blueprint. The planning for the Blueprint that was cancelled by the BOE this year? $8 million, just for planning. We're going to have to throw money at this next year to ramp up. So that conundrum is what I would like my state reps to consider, not the MVA.



Amen. Free pre-K for all is nuts. We already provide free pre-k to income eligible students (and MCPS's definition of income eligible is more generous than the federal govt--which is good). Some of the richest people in America live in MCPS. We do not all need free pre-k.


You boomers can afford the taxes necessary to fund prek. Kindergarten expectations have increased to a point where every child is expected to have preschool. It should be part of the public school offering.


WTF are you even talking about. I'm a genx mom who has had 4 kids go through MCPS (my youngest is a senior this year, my oldest started K in 2004). I have watched MCPS decline during this period as they spend money on useless curricula, consultants, central office administrators. If you think MCPS has budget problems this year, just wait for next year. Taxes will only be going up, and the middle and UMC boomers are getting the hell out, just raising the county poverty rate.

Which ones? If there are other regional options, why not move there? MCPS is not restoring MVA, they do not have the money for it. It’s done. Take your head out of the sand.

The first time MVA was up for cuts earlier this year, someone on DCUM posted that they were using MVA to avoid their high-FARMS local elementary school, so I believe you! The idea that someone would fix their face to admit that they were using the virtual program to avoid educating their kids alongside their neighbors' kids was shocking to me.

It's not cheaper to maintain the program, and it is disingenuous to claim otherwise. The MVA was structured with its own administrators and teachers. Those are duplicating services provided in schools in the county. At the actual levels of enrollment in MVA, moving kids back into their home schools can be accomplished without adding additional teachers in those schools.

What about the kids who have been administratively placed in the MVA because they keep getting suspended from their home schools? Guess, they will be going back to in-person. Guess they can continue to cause disruption. Or the ones who have been assualted by their peers in their home schools? Let's make them go back to where they experienced trauma, with no supports. What about the kids who have been relentlessly bullied? These are just some of the students who attend MVA. School should be a safe place. What about the student who can't focus because of the disruptions in the classroom? The student who excels because they aren't distracted. Until MCPS can provide the necessary supports for all students the MVA should continue.
