How competitive is MS soccer

DS is an athletic kid, but he has not played soccer beyond maybe 4th grade. And he was never really into it when he did play. He just announced that he is planning on trying out for his MS team (we are in MoCo). What are his chances?

It’s competitive. There’s an abundance of travel players trying out, far more than spots on the team.

Please note that MS in MCPS are for grades 6-8 but only 7th and 8th graders are allowed to join the school teams. I expect most Bethesda, MSI, Potomac and other travel players will want to tryout for the school team. Hence, it would be pretty competitive.

Also, MS soccer plays during the Spring season so the school games & practices might conflict with their travel team’s schedule.

The more competitive schools are those that feed into Bethesda/Potomac.

We had a son at Pyle. Virtually no 7th graders made the Pyle MS soccer team on the boys side, and that included 7th grade boys who played for Bethesda and Potomac. It was extremely competitive to make the MS team.

Oh wow! Good to know. DS is 8th grader. He is a very good athlete, but he was never into soccer. He now has a couple of friends who are serious soccer players, which is probably why he wants to try out. I will certainly let him do it, but I want to manage his expectations.

Also depends on how large your school is. Pyle has 1500 kids, NB about 1200. How large the school is will affect how competitive tryouts are.
