I know the side effects include a fever and cough, but I didn't think it would last this long. Is this normal? They've both been running fevers since yesterday and they have coughs. They also feel under the weather.
Has anyone else experienced this after flumist? |
How do you know they have the flu now? Maybe they just have a fever and cough...

Gee, because two of the primary symptoms of H1N1 are a fever and a cough.
But really helpful comment. Thank You. |

Penguinsix,
Thank you for the info. I will the ped a call. |
| A slight fever and cough (cold sxs) can be common 24-48 hours after the mist. |
| My son got the mist on Tuesday, October 27 and woke up the next morning with congestion and cough. While he never had a fever, he did not feel good and I kept home from school on Thursday and Friday of that week. I would have kept him home that Monday, too, but school was already closed (we're in Fairfax County). He still has a cough, but other than that, he's back to normal. |
| my 4yo got the mist on sat and so far, so good. |

OP, they could have been exposed before they got the vaccine. Heck, they could have been exposed in line for the vaccine. It does take a week or two for the protection of the vaccine to kick in.
FYI neither my kids nor I had any reaction to the seasonal or H1N1 vaccine this year, and we got a mix of shots and flu mists. |
My son (2.5 yrs old) got the H1N1 Flumist this Sat too at Cardozo HS in DC. Yesterday He started having a fever, last night it was at a high of just over 103. Still has a fever and is developing a runny nose and slight cough. I'm concerned and will call my ped tomorrow too. |
| It happened to us, too. DC came down with the full blown flu the day after getting flumist and was out of school for a week. The doc said a child with a normal immune system would not have such a severe reaction (high fever, overall sick feeling) for the period of time DC did. Hope your children get better soon, but do consider checking with your pediatrician. |
SO what does your doc mean by that? Implying your kid doesn't have a normal immune system or that he caught the flu despite of the mist (i.e., his flu happned in spite of the mist)? I'm confused by that statement... in any event, I hope he feels better ASAP. |
| Everybody keep in mind, more and more kids are catching the flu every day. Just because the symptoms show up the day after the vaccine does NOT mean the vaccine caused the symptoms. |
Im really thinking that too. While I DO feel for these kids and parents, the Mist CANNOT cause the flu. The way it works is that it replicates in the cooler nose tissue to form antibodies. If it were to travel into the lungs where it's warmer, the weakened virus cannot live. So you can't have the TRUE flu with the mist. I am thinking bc it's so widespread, these kids caught it before their vaccine...

Sorry for any confusion. The doc simply meant that it was likely that DC had already been exposed to the flu before getting the mist. (DC did test positive for the flu when we saw the ped 2 days after the flumist.) Otherwise, in a child with a healthy immune system, any reaction to the vax would be very mild, according the doc. I'm sure the vax didn't cause the flu; it's just one of those things... |
