boarding dogs and contagious conditions

My dog, after attending doggie daycare 1-2x per week for about 5 months, was diagnosed with oral papilloma (as the result of sharing water bowls and/or toys, presumably.) I read that it was somewhat common. Our daycare facility noticed it (presumably after another dog was discovered to have it). Naturally, my dog couldn't return until he was free of the warts/lesions (which appeared on his gums, just two.) So we treated with antibiotics and he's clear, but now what?

I don't know that I want to send him back there. We need care 1-2 x/week for 4-6 hours each day. I realize a dog walker is a solution but for other reasons, not a good solution for my dog. Should I investigate other facilities or take my chances again with this one? FWIW, I really liked this one and felt good about leaving him there for daycare. They won't/can't do anything about shared water bowls but is it reasonable to ask them that my dog not be allowed to use a chew toy? It is too expensive and inconvenient to deal with a recurrence of this condition.

Anyone else deal with this? Or any recommendations for excellent (and cleaner?) doggie daycare in the Rockville area?

Doggie daycare is like child daycare. They should disinfect toys often but your dog will catch stuff. It is impossible to keep your dog from having access to any toys unless they have no toys or keep your in isolation, in which case there is no point to doggie daycare.

4-6 hours is fine in a crate.

The doggie daycare facilities that I know of do not allow dogs to have toys because they are likely to cause resource guarding.

Check out Rover.com for doggie daycare. I'm a Rover sitter and offer doggie daycare since I work from home full time. I tend to get dogs that have separation anxiety and just need to be around someone, rather than dogs that need to get a lot of energy out. But I'm sure you could find someone on Rover that does daycare and has a fenced yard or other dogs to play with if that's what your dog needs. Just look for someone with a lot of verified reviews and repeat customers.

Thank you to the poster who mentioned Rover.com. I didn't know about it. To continue the daycare analogy, I do in fact need a home daycare instead of a large center. I will definitely check them out.

+1

I would look into a rover.com doggie daycare provider.

There are too many dogs at the commercial facilities.

We recently used Rover.com and it was a great experience. The dog sitter stayed in our house and took our dog on long walks and made sure she had her medicine. Took lots of very cute pictures and updated us several times a day. Since it was text it didn't take anything away from our vacation and we felt secure that she and her kitty sister were being cared for and loved while we were away.

We would use them again!
