High School Lottery: What other schools would you place on your list if your DC wants to go to ..

Wilson.

My DC wants a diverse, coed, college prep space where he can be involved in athletics. Your thoughts? He has attended private schools, so small classes would be a plus if there are charter schools that might work. Would appreciate your school recommendations.

Are you IB for Wilson? Can't tell from your post. If so, your search is done. Depending on the sport, it can be hard to make the varsity teams if you aren;t a very strong athlete (e.g. basketball, baseball).

SWW is an option. Some athletics but particularly competitive. Definitely diverse and strong students.

Washington Latin is a charter that fits your description. They have some sports, but not everything. It's also really hard to lottery in for 9th grade (only about 10-15 seats are typically available).

The rest of the charters and DCPS schools are overwhelmingly filled with black and / or Latino students at the high school level. Consider McKinley Tech, EL Haynes. Not sure whether Capital City has a lot of sports teams.

Move in bounds for Wilson or check out one of the suburban high schools. Wilson is really a one of a kind in DC thing.

(There are other good DC high schools. But they are not diverse, coed, college prep, athletic places like the high schools of the movies.)

I think McKinley is the only other high performing high school in DC that has a lot of sports teams. Not as diverse as Wilson but becoming more so.

Are you inbound for Wilson? If so I agree that it’s the best option.

Oh and Latin but agreed that your chance is very, very slim in 9th grade.

Thank you! OP here—so no new charters on the block that seem worthwhile I take it?

IMO nothing that would meet your son’s needs as you described. One of the challenges with charters is that they disperse the population and so there are fewer extracurricular, especially sports that are better at a larger school (more options and facilities).

If you are inboundary for Wilson then absolutely enroll him there. Please do not get fall in the charter school trap for High School unless it’s Latin. Drinking and drugs mainly have own in private home parties. It happens in HRCS also but they know how to cover their tracks even when the police is involved.

What should we take from this, PP?

Maybe that OP specifically asked about diversity?

Apologies, I missed that word!

DCI. Whoever said SWW is diverse is absolutely wrong. Zero % FARMS and it's application only so they cherry-pick.

I wouldn’t give up Wilson for DCI. Class sizes no smaller, hasn’t graduated a single class yet, few 9th grade seats and not nearly the sports program as Wilson.
