Another traffic question. What does STOP painted on the road mean?

Anonymous
I searched but can't find it. So imagine an intersection like a T. There is a regular red stop sign at the end of I, not saying anything, not all way or 3 way. At both sides of ---(top of T intersection) there is STOP painted on the road, not regular red stop sign pole. No stop for pedestrians, but there is a cross walk painted on both sides of -----. Is this a three way stop sign? Or do cars at ---- do not stop, while cars at regular red STOP (pole) sign wait for all traffic? Pavement signs are on a public road, in a shopping/restaurant mall type area. Thanks so much!

It means stop--same as a stop sign.

Ding, ding, ding, ding.

What else would it mean, OP?

OP here. I searched and searched, many sites say it doesn't carry the same weight if just painted on the road. Don't know what to think. Shouldn't the regular red stop sign say, ALL WAY then as opposed to nothing?

This made me think of "No means No" Why is it so hard to understand? Stop means stop. What else could it mean?

Depends if the cross street also has a STOP. Then it would be an ALL WAY STOP.

It means STOP just in case you don't see the stop sign so you don't T bone someone. I would assume it's an intersection with a lot of accidents.

It could mean stop if pedestrians are there, like so many, but they forgot to put stop for pedestrians? Does it mean to observe just like a 3 way? Or do you stop and then proceed while cars at regular stop sign wait for traffic to clear? It is a new outside mall area.

Cross street has a regular red STOP sign, with no ALL WAY on it.

Yes, clearly it means stop. But, does it mean give way to cars coming from I street..or not?

It means school buses must come to a stop there (and then continue on). School buses also have to stop at railroad crossings even with no stop sign or guard down

People are giving OP grief, but I've wondered this sometimes too. Drivers definitely don't treat a painted "stop" the same as a stop sign. At my local strip mall, there's a painted stop in front of every store. No one stops unless there are pedestrians (which seems fine to me).

Thank you! Where I am even more is it you treat it as ALL WAY Stop or not. Meaning people with red regular stop sign have to give way to cars at either end of ----. Or, three way stop?

If there is also a stop sign, consult the stop sign for guidance on this issue.
