Is no mudroom a dealbreaker?

Would you buy a house (newer house built in the 1980s) that had no mudroom and no coat closet? If so, what would you do to create a makeshift mudroom?

No, you can always carve out mudroom space. For the right house, you'll make it work.

Just build one. This is not hard. Figure out where you can add some walls and a handyman can do this project.

We bought a house that didn't have a mudroom and had one custom built- it's really nice and blends into the floor plan perfectly- you'd never know it hasn't always been there. It would have been a deal breaker if there hadn't been a place to build one.

Our 1960s house didn't have one when we bought it (no kids) and we started wishing for one around the time the kids started school. There is no place to put one. They will be gone in 4 years (3.5) and then we won't mind again. nbd (not a dealbreaker)

Would depend on home size and what others have. We have neither and while I'd love one, it obviously wasn't a deal breaker. But we have a 1200 SF 2/1 in an area where some houses don't even have bedroom closets. I'd expect it in a newer development. Look at your comps.

We don't have a mudroom. We have 4 kids. It can work out - we have a coat rack and some bins to put things in, so it looks nice. Kids are used to putting their kids away.

In our next house, I would like a mudroom, but it won't be a deal-breaker.

My 1960s house doesn’t have one and no room to put one and I long for it every single day. But my kids are still little (early elementary and preschool). So yes, my new house will have one.

No no. No.

Moved from a house without a Mudroom (though big Hall closet) to a house with a Mudroom and fall closet.
So glad to have a Mudroom. All the stuff & shoes & backpacks are in there and once you shut the door, no one sees it.
So wonderful to have a nice looking organized house and the Mudroom plays a huge role.

People who say “yes” quite frankly don’t know what it’s like to have this awesome space.
