Selling car during shutdown

Anonymous
I want to sell our old car (we already have a second car that has become our primary car, so we don’t need to do a trade). I was planning to do it this weekend, but then I realized we might get lowballed because of the shutdown. My family is not impacted. Do you think I will have an issue?

I doubt a place like Carmax would adjust for the shutdown.

Most people are not affected by the shutdown.

I don't think it will factor in at all.

First, why would a buyer even know what line of work you do. Second, I doubt that a buyer could lowball significantly if the car is of any value. Third, as PP said, Carmax no haggle pricing.

You will probably get low balled by someone because of the shutdown (some people are opportunistic) but that doesn't mean you won't be able to sell your car to someone else.

OP here. Thanks for the responses. My thought is that a lot of people might be trying to sell their cars, which is why I was concerned about the price I would get back. My point is that I don’t need to sell right now, but it’s been something I have been putting off.

If you get lowballed just don't take the offer. Or set the price as the firm price. Or sell it to Carmax.

Maybe it’s the one thing not affected by shutdown? I mean.....

Why? people are selling their possessions to pay the rent. my spouse is a furloughed fed, and we're planning on selling our baby stuff (which we would normally donate).

How can you be so sure that "most" are not affected by the shutdown? Did you take a poll?

I would hazard a guess and say that most are affected. Either directly or indirectly. Feds, contractors, and business owners specifically.

Its a used car. Most people who are buying it, especially an older car are going to want a deal and lowball. Very few people overall are impacted but the shutdown.

It’s one paycheck. The masses are not running to dump their car because they’ve missed one paycheck.

But they might delay buying a new one right now, which I believe is OP's worry.

OP, if you're in the DMV, then yes, I'd wait if you can. If not, it probably won't make much difference. You can always try listing it and see what you get.

CarMax always pays $100 over kbb value. Go to that site and plug in your cars stats and find out what you would get from them with no haggle. It doesn’t change because of the shutdown.
