| We live in the Midwest but DH has a recruiter talking to him about a position in Edinburg. We have also lived near NYC and Atlanta. No school age kids. It looks about 1.5 hours from DC. |
| It’s a little more than 1.5 hours from DC, probably 2+ hours. I don’t live there but some of my relatives do. It is a long, boring a$$ drive through the mountains to get there and there is not much there. It’s a small little country town. My relatives have lived there for years and love it though. |
| I’ve lived in Virginia my entire life (38 years) and have never heard of it. I’m assuming it’s a pretty small town and if your DH were to lose his job or want to leave, pickings would be slim. |
| With kids, possibly. As DINKS, wouldn't do it. Pretty countryside, but there's not really any there there. |
Same, lifelong Virginian and never heard of it. |
It is just past Woodstock on I-81 |
Well I know where the Woodstock exit is only because that is the one you take to get to Shrinemont. Woodstock is extremely rural, very small, very conservative (that is where the guy with the Trump painted house lives), very homogenous. It also has terrible cell service. I am not saying those qualities are negative (except for the cell service issue). Some people want big, wide open spaces and a rural lifestyle. You can get that there. I assume the closest big town in Winchester, and that’s not big. |
| I visited a couple years ago. It seems cute, but definitely remote. |
| Where in the midwest are you OP? Do not make the mistake of thinking this place is a suburb of DC. Its not. |
Columbus OH |
| I love Edinburg but it is a very small town. Some of the best Italian food anywhere is at Sal’s on Main Street. It is a teeny town but there are lots of things to do in the Shenandoah Valley. Lots of wineries and breweries, caverns and there’s even a little ski resort called Bryce Resort that’s not too far. It really depends on what you’re looking for. |
This is the most fair description so far. I'm guessing most of the "life long Virginians" who've never heard of Edinburgh are from Northern Virginia (i.e., the DC area), which is like a different state. Edinburg is in a beautiful area, but it is quite rural. There are many people in the DC area who have second homes/farms in the Shenandoah Valley, so it's kind of a mix of people, but many are just sort of in and out. However, it does mean that there is some infrastructure with re: to restaurants, resorts, etc. It's a great place to live if you would love to have a house in the country with some acreage or a place on the river. If you're a city person, not so much. |
I am one of the PP lifelong Virginian, and no, I’m not from NOVA. I’m from the 804. Relax. |
Well then, yeah, I’d be looking for a way out too. |
| I always look on area vibes and they give it an A+ for crime, so super-safe! |
