We are relocating from California. My husband will work in Bethesda and my online research shows the schools there are great. We have one child entering Kindergarten and one in 4th Grade. On this side of the country, the advice has been to live in NoVa, but it seems like the commute would be awful. If the schools in Bethesda are great, then doesn't it make sense to live and work there? If we go with Bethesda I am looking at the Whitman or Johnson cluster because they are the closest to his work and seem to have the best scores. This has all been via online research, though. Are there better areas we should focus on? This is an amazing forum and I look forward to any advice you can offer. Thanks! T. |
I would live in Bethesda. The commute from NOVA is crazy. I'd also look at Kensington.
Much depends on what you can afford. Bethesda is very expensive on the whole. Kensington schools are supposed to be great. We have friends whose kids go to Bethesda public elementary and middle schools and they are very happy. |
We love Kensington Parkwood Elementary School, which gets kids mostly from Kensington but also a few from Bethesda and Rockville. |
Whitman and Walter Johnson are excellent, Bethesda-Chevy Chase (BCC) is, too. A little further out are Wootton and Winston Churchill which are also very well-regarded. Kensington feeds into three different school districts - some neighborhoods go to BCC, some to Walter Johnson and some to Albert Einstein which is, shall we say, not so well-regarded. Kensington is a great community with lots of relatively affordable housing stock but be careful with schools when looking for houses. |
OP, will your husband work in downtown Bethesda near the Metro? Or out further in Bethesda? It's hard to answer the question unless you provide more specifics. |
OP here, not exactly sure where in Bethesda, especially in relation to the Metro!
We are going out there in a few days to get a feel for the area. I look forward to everyone's input once I can provide more details ![]() |
