Has anyone's child gotten h1n1 after the vax?

If so, what were the symptoms like? I'm concerned that my 4 yo could have a mild case and that my mom (who has asthma) could have gotten it from him today.

He got the h1n1 vax over a week ago. He has been running a fever (100-104) for three days and has a mild cough, but otherwise he's fine. Saw the ped today, and she said it could be any kind of virus, including h1n1. It honestly hadn't occurred to me that it could be flu since it's so mild, so I didn't stop my mom from visiting today. But now I'm concerned that it could be h1n1, with the vax blunting the impact. My mom has pretty bad asthma and is overweight, so she's one of the people likely to get very sick if she were to get it.

I don't want to panic, and I know we'll know one way or another in a few days if she comes down with something. Just hoping to hear from anyone whose kid got h1n1 post-vax to see if what my son has sounds similar. Thanks.

Regardless of the vaccination, H1N1 can present with mild symptoms. In the description, it says that many people experience milder-than-usual flu symptoms. That plus your pediatrician's diagnosis (H1N1 possible) means you have to accept it as a possibility.

I would keep your child separated from your mother and monitor her situation. Separately, she should talk to her doctor if she is concerned. If her health is bad enough, perhaps the doctor will give Tamiflu as a precaution. And she should find out about getting vaccinated.

At this point, there is not much else you can do about the past exposure, but you can limit future contact. So do that.

I do suspect my DC got mild h1n1 after his first vax. It just looked and felt different than all the other viruses he's had in his 7 years. Also, several kids in his class have been out with positive flu tests. Which I know yield a lot of false positives, but FWIW.

Now my DH has caught whatever DS had, and DH is quite sick and having difficulty breathing after 6 days of this. DS recovered very quickly, as did I, but DH is ailing and also has underlying health issues.

Oh, our symptoms were runny nose, sore throat, some tiredness, a little fatigue. No muscle aches, no gastro-intestinal component.

To the PP - so if I am understanding you correctly (BTW, new poster) you can actually get the vax if you currently have the flu? I thought your immune system should not be compromised when getting any vaccine.

My DC was diagnosed with the flu two days after getting the vax. Apparently he had been exposed (without symptoms) before getting the vax. It's definitely been a little rough, but milder than some cases I read and hear about. DC has been out of school for a week. DH now seems to have symptoms...

My daughter tested positive for "Flu A and B" two days after the vax, which her Ped said means very likely to be H1N1 because there is hardly any other Flu A out there at this moment. (They only do H1N1 test at a hospital for very sick patients) But still technically not confirmed as H1N1.

Symptoms were mild fever (100.7) and cough, got better for a day, then returned with higher fever (103).

remember that your mom may have some immunity since she's older....

Unfortunatley for everyone, the immunity doesn't fully develop till two weeks after the shot and for kids under 10 years, they don't have full immunity untill the second booster 4 weeks after the first shot. The good thing is that your child will have started producing antibodies as soon as they received the vaccine so if they are exposed, they should have a head start fighting the virus and hopefully get a milder case of the flu.

Good luck.

OP here. Thanks to everyone who answered. My mom won't see my son again for a week, and she gets the vax Tuesday. I'm hopeful that if she doesn't come down with anything in the next couple of days, we're in the clear.

Good news is that no one else in the house has come down with whatever 4 yo has, and only one of us (my 20 mo) has had the vax. So it might just be some other bug.
