Painful umbilical hernia in pregnancy

Anonymous
I’m 35 weeks and think I have an umbilical hernia- the midwife said that’s probably what it is and I should come in tomorrow. I wouldn’t be worried but it’s really, really painful. Has anyone had one? Any chance I’ll go away on it’s own? I can’t imagine spending five more weeks like this or possibly pushing.

Sorry you’re in pain. I’ve had two umbilical hernia repairs before pregnancy. My last was done under local. Now, it’s herniating again at 5 months. I’ve heard they’ll operate while pregnant if it’s serious.

I’ve had one with both pregnancies. Same one actually but it’s back and bigger. My midwife explicitly said to let her know if it hurts and otherwise wait until after baby is born for physical therapy. She said as long as it didn’t hurt no to carry on. Really really painful makes me glad you are going in. I hope you feel better soon.

Did this impact your ability to have a vaginal birth at all?

I had one with my first. It was uncomfortable and actually worsened after birth. I had to have it repaired about a year post partum. If you plan on having more kids, get the stitch repair, not the mesh.
