| Looking for something warm that will allow DS to move well during his outdoor winter practices. He’s 8 and small/slender. TIA! |
Just wear under-armor thermo running pants (tights) and the team warm-up pants over them. |
| We don’t have team warmup pants |
Then just get some that are a similar color to the uniform. |

Don't get insulated. He'll get too hot and sweaty, and then end up freezing when he takes a break.
For cold weather soccer, dress like a runner. Think 3 things: 1) wicking (non cotton) base layer; 2) outer layer to block the wind (and rain if they'll still practice in those conditions); 3) layering (so they have the ability to take things off when they start to get hot). So for your son that would mean under armour or equivallent top and bottom, shorts and jersey over that, then wind/rain proof pants, a fleece vest or jacket, with a non-insulated wind/rainproof jacket over that. Hat, and 2 pairs of gloves - one thin and one warmer pair. Let your son unzip and shed layers as he wants, to control his own temperature. You'll be standing around freezing. He'll be running. Most nights with temps in the mid-30s if the wind isn't too bad he'll probably end up with just the base layer plus shirts and jersey. If you question how he can possibly be warm enough like that, run 2 laps and then do 5 x 30 yd sprints and see how you feel.
Make him put stuff back on as soon as he stops though. He won't want to, because he'll still feel warm, but his body will stop producing heat once he stops moving and he'll quickly get chilled if he doesn't insulate again before that happens. Last tip: enforce a hard and fast rule that everything that comes off goes straight into his soccer bag. No throwing things to the side while playing for mom and dad to pick up. No taking things off and throwing them near the bag, or on top of the bag. In the bag. No exceptions. You'll thank me later. | Go with Nike or UA, they both have cold weather gear that would impede on the player's ability to perform. I think UA's brand is Hyperwarm. |
| I agree with the above. Don't over dress your kid. I've seen kids show up in ski jackets. Ridiculous. My son is 11 years old and training only gets cancelled if the feels like is less than 25 degrees I think. He has never needed anything more that a hat and gloves of course and either tights under his shorts or just training pants and an under armor base layer, a jersey/or heavy shirt, and a windbreaker/warm up jacket. Although he has never wore one, I see kids kids with like neck cuffs that they can pull up over their mouths, etc. I think they can come in handy. |

My kids got hot in 28 degree weather with too much clothing.
They practice outside all winter 3 nights and they wear underarm tights and long sleeve as bass, shorts, training shirt and sweat jacket/fleece. Hat and gloves. As the practice goes on, layers are removed. My older one can’t stand wearing tights when it’s above 40 degrees. Neither like playing in training pants/sweatpants. There is no way they would wear tights and sweatpants together. |
*base, not bass |
| Yes. Usually it comes down to just base layer plus uniform unless it’s below 20. Then gloves and hats and the heat packs come in handy. |
| Thanks all! |
