Camp for 12 yr old

Anonymous
I WFH full time. But I've been told that I will need to travel for a week in June. Work is certainly giving me enough notice to make arrangements. DH works full time so he will be home with our DD in the evening. But what do I do with her for a week? She goes to sleep away camp so in the past she has just hung out with me at home. Of course this year, that is the week that I need to be out of town. It seems that at 12 she is aging out of day camps. Suggestions?

She should be old enough to be a CIT or counselor's aide at some camps. If you're in a school district that requires service hours for graduation, some programs will even allow her to start working on those. Many camps have programs like this, but the ages vary, so you'd have to ask around in your area.

Not sure where you're located, but I do know that the Audubon Society in Chevy Chase has a camp program where they do some sort of environmental volunteer work and earn SSL hours. I do know that 12 is old enough for that one.

Again, not sure where you're located, but Montgomery College has a lot of academic and artistic classes and camps for older kids. Stuff like study skills, creative writing, Photoshop, video editing, etc. I'm not sure if all of those are full day, though.

Camp is still ok for most kids at 12. Depends on where you are located, there are a ton of options including Calleva, Valley Mill, Sandy Spring, TIC...

Calleva goes up to 15. Depending on week, can select an option that doesn't have an overnight. Our friend's 14 yo son did it and had a blast.

There are lots of specialty camps that will suit a 12 year-old.
