There have been about 74 deaths since August 30th of which all but 9 were H1N1 (I'm trying to piece these numbers together off the release not the actual spreadsheet which is easier to read, so I'm sorry if I'm slightly off by a bit--the fact that H1N1 ran during the Summer made counting these number confusing). Pediatric doctor visits and ICU rates are also well above the norms and it is only November.

H1N1 has killed more children than the 'normal' flu does in a normal season. In case someone is telling you "it's all a bunch of hype" this cold statistic is what concerns many medical professionals. Why is it harming the young?

I think in teh ened the numbers will turn out to be at a minimum twice as much as current official reports. Diagnosis of H1N1 as a cause of death is turning out to come only in autopsies, sometimes 4 to 6 weeks after the death certificate is filed, with cause of death something like "bronchitis" or "bacterial infection". Only much later are tests showing that the patient was infected with H1N1.

Read this interesting article from L.A. :

http://blogs.uscannenberg.org/neontommy/2009/11/Swine-flu-hits-la-county-victi.html

In several cases, the families we spoke with said they did not know their relatives had died of swine flu until we told them. In these cases, county officials said the diagnoses had been made after doctors filled out the death certificates, and that it is not the county's responsibility to notify family members. Nearly half of the death records do not list swine flu as a cause of death.

(snip)

Many of the death certificates examined by Neon Tommy -- 20 of 44 -- do not identify swine flu or its variations as a cause of death. Twenty-one contain some variation of H1N1, Probable H1N1, Influenza or Influenza A as the cause of death, and three list them only as a contributing factor or preexisting condition.

Public health officials said the extensive testing process can take up to six to eight weeks of review. L.A. County's Plough speculated that it may take that long to determine what role H1N1 played in death because of anatomical, toxicological and chemical tests that take varying amounts of time to be returned.

That said, I don't think this virus is somehow targeting the young. It's just that a lot of people are getting sick, so statistically more will have severe reactons or even die. It is still hitting adults harder than children, but we do not keep yearly statistics on the numbers of adults who succumb to the flu.

OMG why on earth would you post that? We all know kids are dying from this... what pupose did that serve but to make us all freak out?!

Oh GOD. I got choked up. There are photos of the kids. How heartbreaking.

I know it is all heartbreaking and any loss that could be prevented should be. But the numbers are still small - I don't see how it's something to consume my mind. I realize I'm in the minority, though, before you flame.

On the other hand, the cost is so low to prevent it.

someone said somwhere..

that maybe the healthy people who are dying from it are jsut "too healthy?..

as in maybe it is healthier fora human to actually go naturally through
sickesses and colds and flues and that way humanity and
individuals gain natural immunity?

most of seemingly healthy people have tons of vaccinations
on their record that might have change their genetic code..

and furthermore.. why many of htose kids are.. athletic?...
as in those individuals who are usually being pushed
and push themselves over the limits..

maybe their systems could be seemigly healthy but
under the surface it was a tiredness of material?

furthermore there is no data showing how many of those
children did take any cold of flu or vever reductors any other medicines
taht could influence or interfear with natural defense mechamisms
of the body?

it is hard to make any general statements like some try to do
and spread scare and fear without actually looking at full data.

so as mch as those are sad and heartbreaking numbers of real names and real
chldren who died what makes all cry.. this is only partial facts
lets' not forget that to make scientific conclusion we
all would need more then just nubers..

we don't know what and how those children were treated
and what migh contribute to their death
and what might have infulence the course of hte desease.

If someone would like to compile a list of children who never
had any flu vaccines and survived h1n1 flu from april to now
the list would be decissively much much much longer.

just to balnace the fear and scare.

Let's pray for the little angels.
God bless you all.

There do seem to be a number of older kids and teen athletes who died of H1N1 were quite healthy -- as in, they had just played a game of soccer or something the day before they went to the hospital. My guess is that this group has a higher risk of being infected with MRSA, which complicated their flu.
