| Husband wants meatballs in the crockpot for an appetizer (I know, maybe a strange request). I'm going with frozen meatballs, since I'm cooking too many other things, but I'm wondering about a good sauce to go with them. Any recipe suggestions? I know he likes a "brown" sauce. And do I thaw the meatballs first or can they go in there frozen? |

While crockpot meatballs are not my favorite thing, here are the ways I have typically seen them done.
1. In brown gravy (from a jar), I am sure you could spice it up a bit with some herbs, wine, or mustard. 2. With BBQ sauce (from a jar) 3. With a mix of ketchup and grape jelly 4. With tomato sauce (alas, also from a jar) I usually make meatballs from scratch and serve them with homemade tzatziki and pita bread, because I am pretentious.

| Thanks for the suggestions! I like the idea of homemade with tzatziki, but since I am making 4 other appys and this is my husband's request, not my choice, I am going for simplicity! |
| I have seen and eaten the ketchup with grape jelly sauce -- it is much better than it sounds! |
| OP again- for the ketchup and grape jelly sauce- what ratios would I use? |
1:1 |
| Ketchup and jelly - sounds disgusting. Its edible, really? I may have to try it. |
Be daring! |

It's not Ketchup, but rather Heinz 57 Chili sauce and grape jelly. One 12-15 oz bottle (whatever the normal size is) and 1 jar of grape jelly. It sounds gross but is absolutely addictive.
I melt the sauce on the stove and then pour it over the meatballs in the crock pot. I've done it for countless parties. Sometimes I make double the sauce just to have it on hand. |
Agree. I have also made this for many parties and people love it. It is a combination of the sweet and spicy sauce with the salty meatballs....yum! |

My friend made these meatballs for a party and they were so amazing that I got the recipe:
4 pounds of pre-cooked Italian meatballs (Costco is great) 3 cups ketchup 3 cups brown sugar 1.5 cups worsteshire sauce Mix sauce well in bowl, add enough to cover meatballs in a crockpot, and eat until warm. If meatballs are frozen, cook about 4 hours in a crockpot (which tastes better because the meatballs will absorb the sauce more). |
| Another option I have done is 1 jar BBQ sauce and 1 large can of crushed pineapple |

some recipes call for chili sauce instead of ketchup. What is chili sauce? |
| They sell it next to the ketchup - its basically a bit spicier than ketchup, but not as much as cocktail sauce. |
| OP here- I did the ketchup (chili sauce, actually) and grape jelly sauce- fabulous! Turns out this is more common than I thought. The recipe was on the bag of meatballs AND the bottle of chili sauce. Who knew? |
