I have an iPhone. Dh has an Android (not relevant for this Q right now). Our strategy has been to move phone pic files to one computer. All photos stored there, and I back them up on google drive. His phone is easy to move. I think he can plug it in to the computer. iPhone isn’t that easy.
To get it from iPhone to PC, I used to use Dropbox. But it takes DAYS. My friend said to use amazon. I got all excited because 1) I can back it up there during the reprocess of moving, don’t need to back up as an extra step to google. And 2) proved to be super fast. What took days takes a few minutes BUT *******the files on amazon are not .JPEG or any regular pic file. They’re .HEIC. That kills the amazon idea because I want them in a more long-lasting standard format. What do you suggest? I know photo storage has been asked about a lot. I searched but couldn’t quite find my specific Q&A on here. |
Oh for some reason I can’t get them from iPhone to google directly either. I guess I could try again if anyone thinks that will work. |
I'm following this as well. I don't understand why it's so difficult to just transfer directly from iPhone to a computer! It seems ridiculous that there's not a simple way to do it. |
Plug your iPhone into your computer. Mine asks “do you want to transfer” and I say yes. Done.
You aren’t doing something right. |
can you not just use file explorer, go to your iPhone directory, grab the pics and copy/paste? |
This also is easy to set up to auto back up your photos from phone to google. |
Google is your Friend
If you see files with the .HIEC file extension, that indicates your iPhone is taking photos using the new HEIF image format. This is the default setting as of iOS 11, but you need third-party software to view these files on Windows. However, you don’t have to disable HEIF on your iPhone to make these photos more compatible. On your iPhone, head to Settings > Photos, scroll down, and then tap “Automatic” under Transfer to Mac or PC. Your iPhone automatically converts the photos to .JPEG files when you import them to a PC. |
I just log into my iPhoto account and it automatically backs up to my computer. |
Op here. I have HaTeD iCloud. Anyways, the Pc import seems to be working. It’s bringing in jpeg. A few dialogue-box hiccups but so far it’s importing and fairly fast. |
Keep getting an error. It uploaded about 50 files in a few minutes, but now it’s stuck....
Will keep trying. I wish this were seamless. ![]() |
Google Photos is another option that I find super easy and automatically syncs. If I lose my phone I know I'll already have the pictures saved. |
Op here, try as I might I can’t get past the error.
So weird considering it imported 50 pix. And now it says it can’t find any photos. |
Please help.
1) phone > amazon photos app> PC = heic fooes 2) phone > google photo app > PC = just tried this and getting heic files also 3) phone > PC = started working then stopped. FYI, iCloud isn’t enabled so according to Microsoft, it should be possible. 4) phone > iCloud > pc = going to enable iCloud and try this now |
Update: I left it all alone for a while. And Microsoft started reimporting.
Great! It did 300 files, then came up with the above-pictured error again..... |
I go to iCloud and manually download onto my computer. Not sure it’s the fastest but it works. I keep the majority of photos on my computer, and just leave favorites on my phone. |
