My 25 year old daughter has a job offer at UCLA. She would live in Westwood. Other than walking to the grocery stores and occasionally driving to the beaches, she would not be driving. In fact, I doubt she'd take a car (and would rely on Uber). No children.
We are all excited for her, as we have never lived on the west coast, outside of a short time in San Jose. It seems like a great place. Thoughts? |

Sure that would totally work! But she might consider a scooter. UCLA has tons of scooters. When I went to UCLA, I had a little motorcycle (I don't recommend it because you can't wear cute clothes or skirts like you can on a scooter).
I really recommend a car, but that's because I'm a Southern California native and grew up in the era where a car was a must. I guess if she has an Uber account she'll be fine. |
| Bus service in Westwood is pretty good too. Santa Monica, Culver City, and LA bus lines all serve the area. |
| Yep, it’s awesome. Congrats to her! |
|
Westwood is great! Brentwood, the next town over is even better. Montana Avenue to the beach is great too!

She will need a car eventually.
Our public transportation is awful and she will spend a fortune on Uber |
|
Westwood is trashy.
Sorry, had to say it...this is DCUM after all! |
| A car is a must especially if only out of a safety concern (aggressive drivers/night time driving) Scooters are not necessarily nice if she wants to pick up a friend or make larger purchases or just do a nice day of shopping. I would not trust public transportation on the West Coast. Buy her a small decent sized car. |
That's right. Try to live in Santa Monica. Commute to UCLA is good |
| Definitely, consider a car. |
|
OP here. Thanks everyone.
Generally speaking, is UCLA and the surrounding area considered liberal or conservative? |
Why does that matter? |
People are allowed to ask a question without you getting your panties in a twist. |
I’m not sure if that area. I’m in Pasadena and all our neighbors are liberals, as are we. The majority of Southern California is. Though there are pockets of conservatives. We have only been here 6 weeks though. I think there are areas in Anaheim and Santa Clarita that are way way more conservative |
| Piggybacking on this thread...where to live to commute easily to USC? |
