delivery groceries

Anonymous
New mom here, looking for ways to make life easier with shopping & dinner.

I've gotten delivery groceries from Peapod twice but didn't get good produce, cans were dinged, etc.

Any other luck with delivery groceries? Any way around my issues with Peapod?

I've used the harris teeter 'express lane' service a few times, but not for produce or anything i have to be picky about -- just for diapers, wipes, bottled water, etc. It is sort of convenient, sort of not.

Have used Safeway. Not thrilled with the produce or meat. The packaged items were fine though.

It is really hard to describe accurately what you want for produce and meat--how ripe of a banana, how well marbled the steak, etc.

One thing I find immensely helpful is meal planning. By writing up a menu for the entire week, we only go to the store once per week.

And as a new mom, be realistic in how much time you can put into cooking. It is fine to have cereal or eggs for dinner instead of a three course meal. Heck, our baby is now 4 YO, and we had cereal last night b/c we were just too exhausted to deal with anything more complicated.

We get our fruits and veggies from door to door organics, and it has greatly cut down the number of times we go to the store. I've never had a quality problem, and I'm picky.

I've been using peapod for 6 or 7 years now and haven't had problems at all. I could count the number of damaged items on one hand, and that's from hundreds of deliveries. Sorry they didn't work for you. Try calling them and telling them you'd like to give them another try but you are a little concerned about the service to date? Their customer service has always been very responsive for me.

Try Washington's Green Grocer for produce and some dairy - http://www.washingtonsgreengrocer.com

I have used the Washington Green Grocer. It was top-notch supermarket quality. I imagine they obtain their produce from the same suppliers as the supermarkets, but then deliver straight to you (instead of it sitting in the aisles for days before you buy it). I was very pleased - they post their weekly offerings several days before delivery and you can make substitutions or cancel delivery. More expensive that the supermarket, but cheaper than the farmers market.

I thought Washington Green Grocer was awful!!!!

I'm going to try Door to Door Oragnics, tho. Thanks for that post.

Agree with PP about calling Peapod. I don't know if that will immediately improve the quality of produce you receive but they may give you credit for bad produce. I believe they fill orders from a central warehouse (compared to the local store as is the case with Safeway) so maybe eventually things will improve because they are aware of customer complaints. As for the dinged cans, I think they will note it and tell the packer and/or driver. Hopefully the packer and/or driver will take care to avoid packing dented cans or denting the packed cans for future orders.

OP, this may not directly answer your question, but one of the things I have recently done to help with meals (I work full-time) is buy 4 meals from Lets dish. You can either go there and do them yourself, or pick them up, and it's nice to know you have a meal in your freezer on days you don't want to cook. We split the meals when we can, so we have more meals but smaller portions. it's just myself and DH and DD (15 mos) so it works for us.

What didn't you like? I am pretty picky with produce and found what they delivered to be pretty good (better than what is usually available at both my local Giant and Harris Teeter).

They consistently screwed up my simple substitutions and the guy I deal with about it via email was really an oddball. Very strange experience. I didn't feel comfortable using the service.

A PP poster said something about Let's Dish ... I've used Dinner Done (www.dinnerdone.com) since late in my first pregnancy ... the food is always great, and they waive the prep and delivery fee one time right before/after you have the baby

I agree with PP. I know it isn't directly askwering your question OP but esp when I know I'll have a very busy month, I have actually orderd a Let's Dish 14 dinner plan, asked them to split each dinner into two servings, and paid extra for them to do it for me! Having 28 really delicious main courses in the freezer has been a godsend, and even split in half, each dinner is enough for me and my husband, plus a picky toddler, plus plenty for lunch the next day. You do need to fill in with sides, but that's never hard. Definitely worth it every now and then.

I just signed up for a trial box at Door to Door organics. I'm at a point where I need to really get organized and simplify. I'm desperate. It feels pretty indulgent but I'm going to try it.
