Anyone in Rockville and deliver at Georgetown?

Anonymous
I live in Arlington and my OB is at Georgetown and that's also where I had my first baby. We're moving to Rockville in a couple of weeks and I'm 22 weeks pregnant with my second child. I haven't researched Rockville OBs yet, nor have I looked into the hospitals, though a couple of people I know gave a glowing review of Shady Grove.

I want to stick to Gtown because a) I love my OB there (though she may not deliver me when I go into labor--she didn't last time) and b) I dont know anything else, so I feel very comfortable there, and c) It has a fantastic NICU (did not need it first time, but who knows--and this is DH's big point about staying at Gtown)

I don't want to stick to Gtown because when my appointments get closer and closer, I'll have to drag my 1st child down there a lot more and that's not fun with extra time in the car, and of course--the parking sucks. But my biggest fear is that my labor will go fast this time (was 24 hrs last time) and I wont make it to the hospital in time because it's a longer drive.

Any thoughts? Anyone here live in Rockville and deliver at Georgetown? Thanks!

I am not quite in the same situation, but I live in Alexandria and delivered at Sibley because my OB is downtown and that's where they deliver. I figured for the sake of convenience in appointments I was willing to chance the trek to Sibley. Good luck finding a situation that works for you!

I personally would not be concerned about a very short labor if your first was 24 hours (if you'd said your first was 6 hours, then it would be a different story).

I've been thinking about leaving the Georgetown practice myself, and we'll likely be in the MD burbs by the time we TTC #2, but I agree with most of your reasons for staying. For me the biggest issue is the wait times - can't imagine spending 1-2 hours waiting for a 5 minute appointment. But on the other hand, GUH is familiar, there's the wonderful NICU (which we did need for #1, albeit for only a short time). If you have issues with parking, have you tried parking on the street? I find that much easier than having to deal with their garage, but I am also in Zone 2 parking so I don't have to worry about the 2 hour limit.

Also, who's your OB that you love so much?

Dr. Gorman is my OB and I often tell DH that I love her so much I want to hang out with her as a friend And yes, I do park in the neighborhoods to avoid paying (I used to live in Glover Park, so I know the hood very well). It's just a matter of lugging my daughter in her stroller when I have to take her with me, which is good exercise. They always look puzzled when I say I don't need parking stickers The only time I had issues with the parking limit was when I needed blood taken and THAT took forever too. Oh yeah, I think their blood lab is not so great.

I do have friends who had long first labors and short second ones, so that's what's on my mind. But none of them had 45 minute labors, so I guess I'll be okay.

I live on the southern edge of Rockville - White Flint - and switched out of the Georgetown practice at 30w. I had started there while living in DC (long before getting pregnant), but getting down there for prenatal appointments just got to be too much of a hassle, not to mention the waiting time. My husband was a little nervous about making the drive down there in labor if it turned out to be rush hour, especially because we plan to stay home as long as possible, but I don't think we would have switched for that reason alone. I'm now with Midwifery Care Associates, which delivers at Shady Grove.

I drove from Bethesda to Georgetown. It did get annoying when the appts get so close together but I just tried to arrange babysitters for my other kids and take advantage of the alone time.

For me, its worth the drive and headache to have the NICU there and to be delievered by my doc. But it is a pain!

My situation was a little different but I live in Kensington (Near White Flint) and my son was delivered at Georgetown due to preterm labor. I found that it wasn't hard at all to get to the hospital taking the Beltway to Canal Road (Express way, no lights) as long as I went during the middle of the day (i.e. not at rush hour). I could get there in 20 mins., a shorter time than it takes me to get to Shady Grove Hosptial. Parking is kinda of a problem but they did give us a free parking pass because my son was in the hospital over a week. A lot of people I know parked in the neighborhoods. I did the commute for 5 weeks/daily. It wasn't that bad but I had to plan when to head there and when to leave. If you really like your doctor, I say go ahead and keep them. Just plan the appointments in the middle of the day. I can attest that they have an amazing NICU and also was deeply impressed with their MFM group.

For parking at GT valet, it is the same price as parking in the garage.

I was at Georgetown this a.m. for my appts. and their new policy is not to have children under 18 come to appointments. So, that may be something that may help or hurt your decision.

Really? Do you know more about this - is it because of the flu season or do they plan on making it a permanent policy?

I go from Alexandria to G'town. Used to live in DC for my first son, then we moved to the burbs. For son no.2 I went to Gtown with no problems...other than the standard fare. And, now for No. 3 I am still going. I like the continuity of my awesome OB, and I trust that hospital now. I also have my kids see the peds there. It's a pain and maybe one day I will leave, but I am loyal for now.

I did it the other way around. I lived in Georgetown and delivered at Shady Grove. I went great.
