DH and I one same page on gifts? How much does average DC family spend on Xmas gifts?

Anonymous
I am finding that we are spending about $800/ kid on Xmas, maybe more.... wondering if this is average in DC area ... DH and o want to enenln same page on spending - I feel this is normal and DH would prefer to give kids toothpaste lol — what is normal for spending?

I googled the national average and it is about $200-$300 per kid..

We spend about 250-300; I find many people in the DC area go all out in a way that is not comfortable for me. Once in a while we will buy an expensive gift (like an ipad), but usually get it for their birthday rather than for christmas.

Children who get so many gifts don't realize the value of what you get them. They won't play with everything you get them.
That's sad.

Average DC family or average DCUM family?

DH does Christmas gifts for our kids and spends about $80-$100 each. They each get about $50 or so worth of gifts from me for Hanukkah. So around $150 per kid total for the holiday season.

$150-200 TOTAL per kid (including gifts from other people) and teen is getting his first phone. He can’t wait!

Here is the CORRECT DCUM response
We have middle class income of 550k
DW mostly stays home, so no nanny.
Kids gifts are 50 bucks each
We drive to the thrift store on our 8 year old Volvo and purchase a few gently used toys.
We ask that relatives donate to charity in our children’s names.

You’re welcome.

I think people count it up differently. Are you saying the phone is within $150-200?

We do around $50 for our two small kids. We spend about $100 on each other.

They are swimming in gifts from daycare teachers, grandparents, aunts/uncles, older relatives...it's absurd.

You sound stingy with that income. Really selfish to to not allow kids to have some gifts from relatives.

My 3 kids big gift is ps4 this year. They have waited a few years for a gaming system and we think they are ready. This year is higher than typical.

When they were younger it was much less but here is an example from last year:
Big gift = $75 - $100
Clothing = $20 - $40
Book = $10 - $20
Game / craft = $20- $30
Stocking stuffers (flashlight, toothbrush, hair ties) ~$25

On average $150-$200 per kid
