I read that as well. I think everyone can agree the pay-to-play---thousands of dollars to play soccer per year in travel clubs and elite teams is prohibitive for many children.
He gets at the point that the system does not allow for outliers or independents. You have to be part of the big machine/big club/buttboy system to have recognition or even admittance into many leagues/tournaments. |

| I love Bill Simmons but clearly basketball is the domain he’s knowledgeable about. It’s a good thing he’s taken an interest in the sport and it seems the passion has only continued to grow within him. A lot of his points were all over the place and made me cringe but he means well. Possession soccer is an idea that is so much bigger than just “the Barcelona system.” Like what does that even mean? You mean system like they play a 4-3-3 with 1 CDM? Or system like the style of play they utilize? Or system like the training methodology or philosophy at the club when it comes to placing players at the appropriate technical and tactical level, regardless of age? |
