My favorite soy sauce, sadly, is the kind in the little plastic packet that comes with take out. Other soy sauces I've tried to buy taste either too burnt or too sweet. Can anyone recommend a good soy sauce that mimics that salt and sodium benzoate flavor I love so much? TIA.
Could you look at the name on the packets and google it? I bet the Asian grocery store sells it. I use a wheat free brand from Whole Foods, probably not what you are looking for.

Cooks Illustrated says the best two are:
Lee Kum Kee Tabletop Soy Sauce (Chinese) Ohsawa Nama Shoyu Organic Unpasteurized Soy Sauce (Japanese) Whatever you do, don't buy La Choy. |
In good japanese faith, we use Kikkoman.
Kikkoman Low Sodium of course-it's the ketchup of China.
A Korean-American vote for Kikkoman--it's what my mother always used (although, of course, that may have been all that she could get in the wilds of suburban New York).
Only Kikkoman
We love trader joe's soy sauce. it is much more flavorful than kikkoman. not sure if it's like the packets, though
One more vote for Kikkomen's.

Another Korean American who uses Kikkoman Low Sodium (the green bottle).
