| DD is undecided. Any advice? |

Two good choices. Both good value for the money, and well-run schools.
I would say Michigan State because (money aside) a) it is great to go far from home at some point, b) a stint in the midwest will teach your daughter a whole new way of interacting with people... they really are nice, and it makes so much of the day so much easier, and c) my DS who is in the midwest right now would say "go someplace where you know nobody. Try something new!" Also, I found it MUCH easier to land my helicopter from a distance of a thousand miles. (YMMV) On the other hand, Delaware is a great school that does a great job with the students who attend. |

They're both ok. Neither one stands out above the other.
MSU's business school is decent for undergrads. The two kids I know who chose MSU decided they want to do supply chain management; good school for that. What does she want to study? |
| Michigan State enrollments are down significantly bc of Larry Nasser. The school will need a long time to recover from that scandal. And it really depends on what she wants to do. |
OK, so don't do sports management. |
Are you sure about that? https://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2018/msu-to-welcome-largest-most-diverse-freshman-class/ |
A myth along the same lines as applications to UVA would be down because of the Unite the Right rally. It didn't happen. |

While I think you are correct that enrollment is not down much and won't drop in the future, I don't see how the state of Michigan is going to pay (huge financial settlements) for the mistakes of Michigan State without decreasing monetary support for the school. |

Enrollment may not be down but applications are down 8.3% from Fall 2017 to Fall 2018. When you get 30,000 plus applications it is easy to find 8,400 to enroll.
The true indicator will if the stats for the incoming classes begins to drop as they have to lower their standards to meet the enrollment numbers. http://www.espn.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/25430618/applications-michigan-state-university-drop-larry-nassar-sexual-assault-scandals-espn-lines |
Broke and mismanaged tailgate state has to water down standards and over-enroll thousands and thousands of dull kids to pay off its new $600M bonds and idiots parrot the PR spin that it's the most diverse class ever!!!
|
| Assuming you are from DMV, M State is a long ways to go for a school that does not stand out |
Good point and so true. |
Thanks. That was my post. You can tell I spent some time in the Midwest since I managed to say nice things about both schools. I will retire there. |
| MSU just had to take out a $600 million bond to pay off assault survivors, hence this year they have the "biggest and most diverse class ever." They are hard up for the revenue to pay off that bond and its vig. Big U's run by incestuous backwater idiots need to pay the hard way for mismanagement -- starve them of applicants. Go to Delaware. Beautiful campus and more interesting kids. |
Penn State only had a one year drop and then applications went up again. That might be a better comparison than UVA in that the administrations of Penn State and Michigan State are implicated to some degree. With UVA, I think the administration was caught by surprise, but not implicated in any wrongdoing (although a couple of extremist alums were involved in the planning). USC is having some scandals as well and I don't think it has impacted them at all. |
