| Can you do gentic testing for yourself and your partner through Kaiser instead of SGF? |
|
I have Kaiser and did genetic testing through SGF. Both my husband and I did the Counsyl Foresight Carrier Screen. All costs were covered through our Kaiser insurance.
Oddly, later on in early pregnancy the Kaiser OB offered us genetic testing, but much more limited than what we got through SGF. I think they only test for cystic fibrosis. The testing we did through SGF covered almost 200 conditions. I am a carrier for one of them. My husband isn't, but I am kind of glad I know because the fact that I'm a carrier could result in a false positive for our baby when they do the newborn screening. |
| I had a typical pregnancy at Kaiser (ie, no fertility treatments). Kaiser wouldn’t screen my husband even though I was a carrier for several Ashkenazi Jewish diseases. They said he didn’t need it as it was unlikely as he wasn’t Jewish. (BTW, only my father is Jewish - Kaiser wouldn’t test me for anything other than CF until I said I was also Jewish (the whole ethnicity vs religion thing was confusing to them.) Anyway, my husband was screened through JScreen. It’s very affordable and you don’t need to be Jewish. |
| Thank you! These are both helpful. |
