good Pre K or K program for "redshirting" special needs child

Anonymous
I am looking for a full day (9 ish-3ish) program to send my child to next fall.
He will turn 5 in the summer but will not really be "ready" for K in MCPS yet.
He has significant developmental delays and is currently in PEP Classic. Any suggestions
of schools that are more welcoming to our kids? I have looked at the JCC in Rockville so far.
Please tell me if you know of others I should look at. We live in Bethesda.
Thanks!

Maddux school is wonderful. My son goes there and it has been great

Geneva Day School has worked well with my developmentally-delayed daughter (she is in infants and toddlers I was told I&T works with them a lot. They have a kindergarten.

Also...have heard that Children's Learning Center in Rockville is wonderful with special needs kids, and they have a Kindergarten.

Now that I think if it, Children's Learning Center might be better than Geneva for a child your son's age...but I would look into both.

I agree that Children's Learning Center (CLC) does wonderfully with special needs children and has an elementary school in addition to a preschool. If you are looking for a Jewish option, that would make more sense than the JCC that tends to be pretty chaotic.

OP here....we are open to any type of school and are actually not Jewish. Had heard good things about JCC providing an aide/shadow. But, after taking the tour not so sure it is the right school for us. Do any of these other schools provide additional support for students if deemed necessary?TIA

CCPC has a class for 4+ kids who need, as they beautifully put it, the gift of an extra year before heading to K. I don't know if it's full-day though. Slightly more out of your way, but Lowell School also has a Jr. K, for the same purpose.

What is CCPC? Sounds like a great solution.

I am a new poster and would like to know what CCPC is as well. I am in a similar situation with my child who will be 5 in May but not quite ready for K due to some developmental delays.

Bump: any other possibilities?

Our red-shirted five year old is at the Washington Waldorf School. We love it. The teachers completely "get" him at his level. The Waldorf philosophy supports meeting the child where he/she is as opposed to where some chart says he/she ought to be, and the teachers have been very understanding and supportive of him with all of his delays. We haven't decided whether we will keep him at Waldorf next year or send him to our local K (Wood Acres), but it's a positive reflection on the strong welcome we've found at Waldorf that we're considering keeping him there.

New to all these terms. What is "redshirting"?
