Shen Yun - Has Anyone Seen It?

Anonymous
Has anyone actually seen the Shen Yun show? It seems to come to town 1-2x per year. I see posters advertising the show in store windows, have been given flyers and not too long ago saw a commercial for it. Is it any good?

We saw it a few years ago. It was enjoyable. If you like that sort of thing it is worth seeing. A friend who went with us explained there was an underlying religious theme. It is not judeo Christian in origin, so it is probably lost on most people. (Or so I recall). But no real missionizing.

Realize that you are going to a fundraiser for Falun Gong, so the underlying theme is not so much going to be spiritual as it is political.

It’s a lovely show, something different

Falun Gong is first and foremost a spiritual philosophy. You could call it a religion. Like many other such movements in history, it has been suppressed by a government. You could say that of Protestantism in Europe.

Most of their money is used to fund influence operations around the world and criticize the Chinese government. Which by itself is fine because they've been terribly persecuted. However they are an incredibly shady organization because they are not transparent about where the ticket sales go or why they are throwing these cultural events. It's like showing up a cooking class and later finding out later that it was a Republican fundraiser - like huh? So creepy that it's not disclosed up front and makes you wonder what else they are hiding.

Oh I believe you. That is exactly how a religion operates

Good to know. Sounds cultish. I'll skip it.

Same here. I had no idea! I did wonder why it seemsed to be promoted so aggressively. Makes sense now!

This thread made me laugh.

If you had no problem with the opening performance at the last olympics in China (where, beautifully, all the various ethnic groups in China were positioned in costume along the Great Wall in a false message that China respects its ethnic peoples with different religions) then I’m not sure why you would have a problem with this performance that tells the story that the opposite is in fact true.

It is a cult. Do some research. Don't take your kids.

Yes, next thing you know they'll be dancing with Shen Yun. It's just a performance.

My parents saw it. They had a good time. Felt the ending political/preaching was awkward...as they were at a show and intense to do nothing about any of what the people said...... My parents are kind and open-minded but it was annoying to them. Overall they felt meh about the preachiness but still impressed by the show.

We went last year. It was not at all what we expected. It was colorful but terrible. It was undercover political leaning. The actual acts depend on which touring company you get. Would never do it again.

Yes, I thought it was impressive.
