Unable to lift during 2WW

Anonymous
I'm currently undergoing IVF treatment and work at a childcare center. My doctor told me I would not be able to lift over 20lbs for at least the 2 week wait, but possibly after that. Lifting isn't a huge part of my job, but it is something I have to do throughout the day in order to fulfill my duties. I'm worried if I'm unable to lift for an extended period of time my job could be in jeopardy.

Any one have experience with this? Are there laws that protect me? I've tried googling, but so far wasn't able to find much.

No experience with this but can’t you confide in a friend - not necessarily why you can’t lift heavy weights but just that your doctor says you can’t be lifting things for a couple of weeks and that you just need a little help for that time period?

Your doctor can write a note and they have to “reasonably accommodate.” This certainly sounds reasonable to me.

My assistant has agreed to help me for a few weeks, but if my doctor recommends it going on longer than a few weeks I'm not sure how understanding she'll be. There is a very set way of doing things where I am. Each person has their responsibilities and is expected to do them. Like I am expected to do X number of diaper changes a day. Also, if I can't lift up the children it will make it harder for me to console them and all around contribute what is expected of me in the classroom. I know I'm good at my job and that this will only be temporary, I'm just not sure my employer will see it that way.
