DD woke up with a 101 fever. I gave her motrin and she seems ok now. Not full of energy, but ok. I don't know if she has the flu or a cold or something else.
If she feels up to it, would you let her trick-or-treat and just be careful not to let her get too close to anyone? (Her brothers can ring the doorbell and get her a piece of candy and she can hang back a bit with me so she doesn't have to stick her hand in anyone's candy bowl.) Or do I really need to quarantine her for the night? |
| speaking as someone who will be answering the door all night and as someone who has a newborn in the house who I may infect, I say please leave your kid at home. my pediatrician told me that swine flu virus can be caught 10 feet away. |
If you are going to keep her away from the doors, people handing candies and candy bowls, I see no problem in taking her. Have fun! |

Our school's policy on fever dictates that a child must stay home 24 hours after their fever returns to normal (w/o aid of Tylenol, etc). So, in your case, your child should be considered contagious and/or pre-ill for the next 24 hours since you discovered the fever, even if it's gone now.
Sorry, but in my book, that would mean no trick or treating. My DD7 missed her class party yesterday, even though she was completely recovered because she was in the post-24 hour fever window. Luckily, she does get to go out tonight, but just saying, I know it's hard to disappoint your child. |
| ETA: I would consider taking her out if you get one of those C92 (or whatever medical grade they're called) masks that filters out H1N1 sized particles, AND she sits in a wagon that you're pulling. If she's very young, maybe even better to sit in a stroller with the rain shade over it? |
| I think you should keep her home. |
| Keep her home. |
OP said she was not going to let her child go up to the door or take candy from a basket or bowl. Being outside is different than being in school in close quarters in an enclosed space with lots of other children. I think if you let her walk around with you and don't let her within 15 feet of anyone's house, it's ok to let her go. |
| No way. She'll be walking PAST people as she walks around. 24hrs fever free, NOT with motrin. |
|
Please don't bring your child to my house with a temperature. The only reason the temp is down is because of the Motrin. Keep her inside.
When my child had the flu, we stayed inside the entire week, no trips to McDonalds, no trips anywhere to spread the disease. Maybe I should get a mask and gloves out if parents are actually going to let their sick children come to my house and trick or treat. |

OP, do you mean your child woke up from a nap with a 101 fever?
Your child is sick. For her own sake, she should not be going outside, walking around. It is raining, in my neighborhodd, right now. Have someone else take her bag around and get candy for her. Let her stay at home and wave to kids through the window. Stinks, I know, but sick is sick, and it isn't healthy for her to go out walking around. This is a life lesson. You are sick = you miss things. How you as a parent handle the disappointment and the explanation is the lesson -- these things happen, I know you are disppointed, it is no one's fault, but if you are sick, you shoudl stay home. |
| keep her at home for both her sake and the sake of other kids walking around and people whose houses you are visiting. |
| I can tell you after tonight's festivities, apparently many parents were nonplussed about taking sick kids up and down the sidewalks. The coughing and sneezing was relentless... |
| keep her home |
My kid had a cough but I let him go trick or treating. He's been sick, but he was fever free for 24 hours, so I let him go. |
