We are starting to think about a sleepaway camp for our sons, who will be almost-12 and almost-10 next summer. The older one has been to Sandy Hill Camp twice, but we'd like something more camp-like, meaning, rustic, where he would have the opportunity to learn outdoor skills.
Any suggestions? |
| someone from a previous post had recommended Camp Letts in Edgewater, MD. I am planning to look into it for my son who will be 12 by next summer. I believe the facilities are cabins, but the camp is on the water and they do canoeing, kayaking and horseback riding. |

My sons have spent multiple summers at Camp Timberlake in central VT. It's very rustic - open air cabins without electricity. Boys spend their time learning (and using) outdoor skills - hiking, canoeing, camping, rock climbing, kayaking, etc. They also have a large organic garden, learn basic construction skills (building cabins, tree houses, benches, whatever is needed), swim daily in a lake, do arts and crafts. It's heaven for my suburban kids. There's a sister camp for girls and some other more specialized camps.

| OP here - thanks so much to you both. I'll look into these. |
| Our boys love Camp Horizons, which is co-ed and located in Virginia. |
| Camp Letts, Falling Creek (boys only) & Independent Lake Camp |
| Camp Wachussett (sp?) in Vermont. Lots of kids from this area - very much a place for boys to be boys. Founded by a former Landon teacher, been around forever. |
| Look into Echo Hill Camp on the Upper Eastern Shore. I sent my son and daughter there last year and they loved it. It's rustic...if the chiggers were any indication... Honestly, my kids both go to single sex schools, and I thought it would be a good thing for them to have this to share. They STILL talk about it in the car on the way to school... My son was 12, my daughter, 9. No electricity, outdoor latrines; right on the Bay, sailing, tubing and skiing; so that qualified as bathing. They went for 2 weeks and are lobbying for 4. One of the evening activities was a toga party! Wish I could go... |

not for boys only, but I plan to send my boy here when he is older. I was a counselor here a lifetime ago. Very rustic, lots of camping outdoor skills. Kids live in platform tents in the Black Mtns of N.C. |
| A friend's boys go to Gwynn Valley Camp in NC and love it. They do a lot of outdoor stuff and I think there is a farm there or something. |

This is more of a nature/outdoor camp than a wilderness skills camp.
www.burgundycenter.org The staff:camper ratio is outstanding & the personal attention each child gets is great. The facility is very rustic, but the opportunities for hiking, camping & enjoying the outdoors are immense. Junior Camp is for the 10 and under set, so this might not work for both of our kids this summer. |
| I found the camp my oldest son goes to thru a free advisory service to parents called Tips on Trips and Camps. I was so impressed with it that I now work for them as a camp advisor. It's a company that's been in business for 38 years advising parents on the overnight camps and teen programs around the country and abroad. You tell an advisor what your child's interests and specifications are (location, length of stay, size, co-ed or single sex, specialty sports or just fun all around camp etc.) and we can send suggestions, brochures/dvds etc. of various camps that fit what you're looking for. We get a small referal fee from the camp you decide to attend. We represent over 500 programs. It is such a smart way to find the best program for your child. If you want to contact me about it please fee free at meg@tipsontripsandcamps.com |
| Keewaydin in Vermont, but it fills up fast. The oldest overnight camp in the country. My daughter has gone to the sister camp, Songadeewin, for years and loves it. |
