VYS 1st Graders Playing Positions?

A mom mentioned her son's VYS team started putting kids in positions based on ability. Is this information accurate? Thought it'd a bit young to do so?

I mean, as ridiculous as that is, I'm partly impressed... DH coached DD's first grade team this fall and it was all he could do to get the kids to run in the right direction on the field, let alone actually play a position.

At least one ASA rec coach does this-- we played against them and they were constantly screaming at the girls, "Abby, you're right back! Molly, you're a forward!" Our girls were impressed.

We have kids in 4 positions during rec (4v4), but none of it is really based on ability. The four positions are all based on center midfield based diamond or box. It didn't take long for most kids by u7 to recall how to keep shape, tuck, get wide and support. I switched them up across quarters and games so they all got a chance to play everything and with everyone.

We have a lot of player continuity from u6-u8 so that helped, we have our fair share of very new players and those with very different skills and athleticism.

girls btw.. they are a fun bunch. we have a great time learning fundamentals and playing soccer.

tbh only when they are kind of in a position can they really get why it's important to be able to look up to see the field, have passing and touch down and it became more fun to play soccer, not just to run around playing magnet ball.
