Was It H1N1?

Anonymous
DS came home from 1st grade on Wednesday with a 100.6 fever. The fever seemed to break that night and he was pretty consistently normal all day yesterday - with only 1 dose of tylenol at 6 am (highest temp was 99). No other symptoms other than some achiness. 98.4 this morning, so we sent him back to school. Pediatrician said no need to come in to the doctor. Should we assume he had H1N1?

Many with H1N1 report it coming in two bits, a first mild event, then a 24-36 hour break or reduction in fever, followed by a much harsher second dose. People are saying it lasts about 3-5 days or so. Doctors are recommending kids not return to school until they have gone 24 hours without a fever and without fever reducers.

It seems like you DS had something, but I wouldn't necessarily assume it was the flu. I certainly wouldn't change my vaccination plans based on a one day event.

Since doctors aren't checking specifically for H1N1, when my DH came down with the flu, we just proceeded under the assumption that it was H1N1 (even though it was mild), treated it as prescribed and with herbs, and he stayed out of public until his fever was gone for 24 hours (as they suggest). We just hope that somebody else who was sick would do the same for us and stay home.

I thought the fever with the flu (of any kind) was higher than that.

Apparently every cold, virus or allergy type symptom is H1N1.

Nah, but many certainly could be. Or maybe they aren't. It's a mostly mild flu, sometimes without fever, although in plentyt of people it is more severe. So, you just don't know.

I thought that too untill this week when I have seen families at my school where one child had the flu really bad (high fever, cough, could hardly get out of bed for a whole week) and other children a week later also got sick but only had a mild fever, small cough and sore throat.

From what I have seen at my school (i'd say maybe 10 familes in all) at the very least a mild fever and cough were present. the biggest difference between the flu and a cold was that with all of the cases of the flu the symptoms lasted at least 3-4 days.

I have also seen a cold going around, the cold had the fever but no cough (expect in one child who had asthma) and lasted about 2 days.
