I really don't want to wait in line for 3+ hours tomorrow. Yet I know this flu is rampant (though we haven't known many people personally who have had it). Am I the only person waiting until things calm down a bit and the vaccine is more readily available? From reading these boards I feel like I'm in the minority.

My DH is, and he could get the vaccine today (asthma). I was more worried about getting DC in to the clinic because he has to get 2 shots (under 1 y/o), and they have to be spaced out by 4 weeks. I understand from my uncle who is an ER doctor that, if you're not in a priority group, then your reaction to H1N1, if you get it, wouldn't be much different than your reaction to the regular flu. FWIW, he did contract the swine flu (treated way too many patients with it) and didn't suffer any more than he would with the regular seasonal flu.
I guess the fear is that if we wait another month, we'll get the flu in the meantime (since it appears to be spreading rapidly in the region).

The vaccine takes about two weeks to take effect, so we're going to go now in the assumption we'll get more flu-free weeks this season (and in case things get really crazy).

We are. My pediatrician advised me to wait a month after the vaccine came out--I'll be seeing her this week for a well child appointment and will revisit issue then, but until then no H1N1 vaccine for us.
Has anyone heard of instances of any serious side effects yet (e.g. Guillaine-Barre)--I could be WAY behind the curve since I haven't been keeping up with med reports about the rare but serious side effect people were fearing. I too am tired of suspecting every fever to be H1N1; it's as if we have forgotten how many bugs kids get/bring home every school year. |
We are waiting until my pediatrician has it. May be a few weeks.
Just when I think I may wait until the craziness dies down (or even forgo the vaccine for my DS), I hear stories in the news about the severe pneumonia that some children develop as a result of H1N1. Apparently H1N1 goes deeper into the lungs than the seasonal flu. I'm torn. The mass vaccine hysteria scares me a bit, but I want to do the right thing. I'm also curious about the possibility of long term side effects. It seems hard to find balanced information about this. I get the impression, though, that scientists have made great strides with these types of vaccines over the years. Any thoughts?
