Can DC get off at a later stop on the same bus route?

Anonymous
I’m going to call the bus people in the morning, but does anyone know if a student can get off at a different stop on the same bus route? I know you can’t tske a different bus than your regularly assigned bus, but DC has a play date after school with a friend who takes the same bus home. I’m hoping they can both just get off at the same stop, even if it’s not the normal stop for DC. Anyone have experience with this? Thanks!

What school system?

In MCPS you can take different school bus to go to your friend's house and also get down at a later or earlier stop on the same route.

Because they are irresponsible. See other thread.

Every school within MCPS is different. Even in some high schools in MCPS, you can get on any bus and go anywhere, and at other high schools, you need a note signed by a parent, and they call home to confirm it's okay. This is our current experience (2 kids at 2 different HSs because of magnets). In MS, my kids could get on any bus and go anywhere to any friends house any time - no note needed. In our ES, BOTH kids needed a note (your kid, and the kid who's house you were going to - they said this was because kids sometimes made play dates in ES during the day without parents knowing/realizing parents needed to know!).

Yeah, in HS, you can just take whatever bus. If this is elem school, just write a note. My kid took a different bus home with a friend a few times in elem. I think I wrote a know, & she alerted her teacher, and the girls showed the note to the bus driver.

In ES and MS we had to write a note to take a different bus but no one keeps track of which stops kids get off at. How would they even do that..have a check sheet each day?

We have to write notes for elementary kids but I've never heard of a bus driver checking for that. When my oldest was at Westland MS they announced that some busses were only open to regular riders - they were too full for anyone else. Again not sure if that was enforced by drivers but since kids had to stand in the aisles it might have been self-enforcing!

Yes absolutely. We do this at our ES and the bus driver never asks for a note or anything. Your kid can get off at any bus stop.

However, if he wants to take a different bus, you do need to send a note.

MCPS announces a 1/2 day months ahead of time. Parent forgets. MCPS is irresponsible. OK.

Thanks, everyone. I gave DC a note to show the driver in case there’s a problem. Because I’m a helicopter, part of me wants to go to the regular bus stop and make sure the driver says it’s ok. If it’s an issue will he keep her on the bus and take her back to the school?! I don’t want her riding alone on any bus ever.
