Penn State, good for a top student?

Anonymous
Hello all, DS is highly considering Penn state, but he is also looking at schools like UVA, Tulane, Boston college, UMD, and Cornell. He has a 4.0 GPA and high test scores. I don't know whether i should support this or not. I've heard they rarely give any money OOS and I just feel like he could do much better. I'm worried he is selling himself short since he has a good chance at much better schools. He is also very academically inclined and works very hard. Is penn state just mediocre or a top school? I don't feel like it is a good fit for him academically and for that price. What do you guys think with this type of student and this school? Doesn't it seem more like a safety for him? Is the honors college that good that if he has the choices he should consider it with the other schools he is applying to?

No, definitely would be his safety school. Pretty much everyone gets in.

No. Don't go. I went there - it's awful.

Caveat:

If you are white, in-state, honors college, stem - then have it on your list.

Pedophile State U. On your diploma if you graduate.

A 4.0 will not get you into UVA, unless you're an athlete.

I wouldn’t pay out of state for it vs in state UMD or VA Tech (depending on whether you live in Md or Va). The honors college is great, but no one really knows what it is or values it in particular on a resume.

For what program?

Did OP say weighted? Otherwise what unweighted GPA would you deem sufficient?

That is not true. It is much easier to be admitted to a branch campus than to the main campus, however, definitely not "everyone gets in". I would not rely on this forum for information on the school. As you can see by the few comments posted and the multiple past boards on this topic, DCUM is not necessarily a fan. If your son is interested, go visit the school. Form your own opinion instead of relying on DCUM.

The world isn’t a fan. Because of, you know, institutionalized pedophilia.

This is what I hate about DCUM. It's so out of touch with the real world. Yes for a top student Penn State might be a safety, but how can you say that a school that is ranked #59 in national universities is a school that "pretty much everyone gets in"?
