Also, in addition to a planning period, the teachers have study hall time. |
Actually our middle school in FCPS opens doors at 7:15 |
I teach kinder and the curriculum expectations are insane. The things we have to teach and cover and don’t have time for like everyone else. And the county kindergarten office put a “play/choice time” into the expectations yet our admin didn’t put it on the master schedule for us so there is literally no time to play and meet academic minutes. Any craft I want to do that’s for fun and not tied to academics means I cut something to do it. We even have data dialogue meetings. |
DP. You woke up on a Saturday morning, and decided to bring this mood into the world? Maybe take an online break if you're that triggered |
DP means Different Poster. You weren’t calling me on a lie. I didn’t make that post. Here I’ll fork feed you the word salad: You are being unkind and rude. This forum can be accessed by anyone and anyone can post here. Don’t attack people who disagree with you. Explain why you disagree. |
Okay, let's analyze what you are saying. Let's say the op teacher is a nasty, nasty liar and her students come at 7:30 instead of 7:10 like she alleged. She was making the point that she is routinely expected to go 5 hours without using the rest room. But thanks to your clever deduction, we now know that is a gross exaggeration and she is actually asked to go 4 hours and 45 minutes without a restroom break. Whatever is she complaining about! God, I hate how these teachers complain! Five hours without a break, yes, I understand that, totally valid complaint, but 4 hours 45 minutes? She is SUCH a whiner. This just totally invalidates every complaint any teacher has ever had. In fact, teachers should be so THANKFUL they get the privilege of teaching your little shithead that they are happy to be treated inhumanely and abused! I mean, she could never have the chance to use the bathroom, had she ever considered that? Using the bathroom is a privilege, not a right. Unless you're telling my child they need to wait five minutes so you can finish instructions before they go. Then it is an inalienable right on par with the rights to life and liberty. Unrelated, but why is there such a teacher shortage? Nobody wants to work any more. |
This is not a lie. The post says "kids are in my classroom at 7:10," not "school begins at 7:10." I know at my school, we are required to be in our classrooms at 7:10 because students get off the bus and go straight to their first class. So if the doors open at 7:10, there could be students in the room at 7:11. Saying "kids are in my classroom at 7:10" is not a lie. 7:10, 7:11, it's the same thing. |
Okay, so some kids are in classes at 7:11. What a horrible exaggeration to cut a MINUTE off the time! ![]() |
And parents wonder why teachers are quitting mid-year….. |
I hear people saying over and over "but they have a contract"! Here's the thing with contracts, both parties are bound by what they agreed to in writing. The only time I've ever seen anything about what would happen when a staff member breaks their contract is from catholic schools. Often they have a "if you leave early, you must pay $2500" piece in there. That was there because their pay is so low, it isn't uncommon for teachers to leave mid year.
Presently, there is nothing in the contract that says teachers cannot leave mid year. There's stuff about pay, sick days, grievances, health insurance, etc. Now, given the sheer amount of teachers who are leaving mid year, some future contracts in some districts may eventually have wording that reflects some kind of financial penalty for leaving mid year. It'd have to be a huge penalty though and then districts would also have to get teachers to agree to a contract with that in it (which would never happen). Here's what would make sense for everyone: Start supporting teachers. Period. If a teacher says, hey, I need a TA for this one kid because they are out of control, then give them a TA. If a teacher says they are being required to do too many 1:1 tests in early childhood, cut the amount of testing in half. If teachers are saying they need time to do real work for their real students? Stop having so many meetings that have nothing to do with anything. Stop saying teachers are the experts in one breath and then ignoring them in the next breath. |
Luther Jackson middle school holds kids on the bus until 7:10 then sends them directly to classrooms. Teachers are required to be in their classrooms by 7:10 to receive them.
So no, the teacher is not necessarily exaggerating. It’s one reason I left the school—being there by 7:10 and supervising students at 7:10 are very different. Now I can get 15 minutes of copies/grades/etc done from 7:10-7:25, which is super helpful in allowing me to get my own child on time after school. |
DP. I'm not at Jackson but my school does the same thing. I expect a lot of departures at the end of the year and that's one reason why. |
Yeah. I switched to a school that respects teacher’s time without students and my quality of life has gone up immensely. I no longer have to hold my own lunch detentions (admin does it!), babysit kids before the bell (again, admin!), or do lunch duty (admin!!) and it is amazing. |
Teachers are required to receive students immediately, as soon as the door open at 7:10, at many FCPS middle schools. So it definitely is entirely feasible that in many schools, teachers are supervising students as early as 7:10. |
The bottom line is teachers are leaving and with everything going on in schools and the lack of support we are going to see the shortage get worse. Parents can deny it all they want. |
