My mother, a big quilter/sewer, is coming this weekend and she always enjoys looking for fabrics. Last time we went to the G Street store in VA and their selection seemed really sparse compared to prior visits. Does anyone know if the Rockville location is any better than the VA location? Any other recommendations for good fabric places besides G Street (not Jo-Ann's).
Thanks. |
| If you do go to the Rockville store, keep in mind it has moved from Mid-Pike Plaza to the plaza around the corner on Randolph Road (with Golds Gym, Fortune restaurant, etc.) |

Ages ago I went to the VA G Street, and wasn't as impressed with the quantity/selection as the Rockville store. I have yet to get to the new G Street location in Rockville.
And if you're going to drive (presumably) from VA to Rockville, head up the Pike a bit further and make a stop at Capital Quilts... It's a fabric store and quilter's dream. (My mom is a quilter and raves about Cap. Quilts...) You can get directions from their website: www.capitalquilts.com. |
Funny, I had a similar reaction the last time I was in the Rockville store (late summer 2007). Haven't been to the new Rockville location, though. |
| Not to hijack OP, but I am a bit concerned about fabric selection. Seems like fewer people sew, and if G street has trouble keeping traffic, we could see the end of an era. I grew up at G Street, my mother sewed everything. |

You should also take her to Vienna Quilt - I heard good reviews. I went to the new location in Rockville and was very underwhelmed - I was looking for fabric to make my own baby bedding and the selection was HORRIBLE! The fabrics looked cheap and were so ugly (little bears, flowers and the like?).
But I can't say about the other types of fabrics, just the baby/kid stuff. |
| I always thought Jo-Ann's had better fabric than G Street. The selection isn't really that big, but it just seemed that what they had was less chintzy looking than G Streets. There's a Jo-Ann's in Gaithersburg by Rt 117 & 124, and others scattered around the area. |
| I don't know about quilting, but their duvet/upholstery/curtain selection at Rockville is AMAZING. I love it, I drive all the way from VA to Rockville when I want to make something nice. |
| Exquisite Fabrics in Georgetown (in the mall at the corner of M & Wisconsin) has lovely fabric, although they go more for upscale apparel fabric, which might not be what she wants if she's primarily a quilter. |
