| So how many kids from top travel teams (Madlax/VLC/DCE/NL-level teams) get to high school and end up not making their high school team? I assume not often? Or have they all spoken with the coach when they applied? |
It all depends. For my area, HS is more for fun, any halfwaydexent player or someone with athletic gifts will make it.. The competitive team for where I'm willing to drive is BlackWolf. Enrollment in competitive sports accross the entire country is down. There is an element is parents who understand that academics come first and this is usually at odds with competitive sports. |
It would be rare for such a kid not to make the varsity team by sophomore or junior year. Many will make it freshman year at most schools. Whether the kid plays depends on who else is on the team--only one, maybe two, goalies play; maybe five attackmen get minutes; etc. |
Do you mean a public high school team? That is hard to imagine. It is more likely that they won't have time to play on the high school team because they are too busy playing club. If you mean a private high school with a powerhouse lacrosse team, then there is no guarantee, but the question would be whether the coach recruited them to play or if they were trying out as a walk-on. |
Nope. http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/research/ncaa-sports-sponsorship-and-participation-rates-database
1982: 12.43 million students, 231,445 athletes = one in 53.7 students is an athlete 2018: 19.93 million students, 494,992 athletes = one in 40 students is an athlete |
My son plays for one of those clubs you listed - I don't know of a single kid in the program who didn't make the high school team. If you're referring to just Varsity, then yes some freshmen kids will not make Varsity but they will for sure make JV. Almost all move up to Varsity their sophomore year. If your son is good enough to make one of those teams, I wouldn't worry about making the team. I'd worry about putting in the work before/after practice to get significant play time. |
