Great room area rugs?

Anonymous
We have a great room with hardwoods. The dining table is about 6’ away from the couch, so the rug under the table will be in close proximity to the rug under the sofa; about 18” away.

Should the rugs be the same or different. I’m really having a hard time deciding what to do here.

OP wvain... the room is very similar to this:

So you can see why I’m tempted to just use the same pattern rug!

Definitely use the same rug. You don't want competing patterns or colors.

I think they can be totally different rugs in the same color family. I'd choose one for the dining area that's easy to clean and won't show dirt. I'd choose one for the living room that's more comfortable on your feet.

my dining room rug is about 18" from my living room rug at the closest spot. They are similar piles, and have complementary colors. the living room rug has several colors on a light background and the dining room rug is mostly one of the darker colors from the living room rug. It feels really boring to use the same rug, like the people ran out of creativity or a hotel lobby. Just no.

I like the living room picture from above except for the two rugs being the same.

Also the garden stool little table is too far from the chairs to be useful. It just looks awkward where it is.

OP again. What if it’s a patterned rug like this?

How do you coordinate two rugs with patterns?

I had the same thought. It's like they're trying to match two totally different setups.

The color palette should be complementary. I like that pattern but I would avoid synthetics unless you are okay with replacing within 3-5 yrs.

This is the only one where having the same rug for two areas doesn't bother me. I think because the rugs have so much texture and are a harder material? I am not sure. But I like this. I don't usually like when it is the same rug repeated.

Or, just use a rug in the family room and leave the hardwood in the dining room (much easier to clean up spills from hardwood than carpet).

Tried it, looks too bare, unfortunately.
