SLP suddenly on leave- ok to have a break for 6 weeks?

Anonymous
My SLP is pregnant and suddenly announced that she will be stopping work now, rather than in 6 weeks. She had already set us up with another therapist but that new person does not have an opening for us until the originally agreed upon date. I am not faulting the pregnant SLP but am stressed about stopping speech therapy for a month and a half (and then jumping into the holidays and snow season). Should I find a new practice?

How old is your child and what are the issues?

PP's question is important: how old is the child and what are the issues?

We faced a similar situation a few years ago and took a break from speech. My DC did a tae kwon do trial membership during the time we normally went to speech. It was great for motor planning, social skills, and confidence (!). My DC came back to speech recharged. This obviously depends on the issues you are working on, but I wound up liking the break -- for everyone.

A break can be a good thing. If, after a couple of weeks, you feel there is a problem, you can seek another practice that can see you sooner.

I'd take a break. We went to someone else when ours took off a few weeks and it was a mistake. My child (nor did I) liked her and he kept escaping the room to look for his therapist. Sometimes a break for both of you is good.
