My DD is doing fine at the end of the first quarter in Spanish 1, but I don't think she has a great grasp of the material. Any suggestions on how to reinforce? We have tried Duolingo, but it is teaching different material (more useful says DD).
Thanks! |
Quizlet is helpful for memorizing vocabulary. Watching YouTube videos or cartoons in Spanish is a fun way to reinforce vocab and pronunciation. The way world languages are taught these days is very different from how I learned. I was very skeptical when DD was in level 1. I was surprised by the basic things she didn't seem to know. But now that she is in level 3, it does seem like she has learned quite a bit. |

I've been learning Spanish on my own and these children's songs from YouTube are what's worked the best for me. You can choose either Spanish or English subtitles. They're typically focused, so you can try to match up with her vocabulary (numbers, animals, colors, foods, etc.)

Is in the 6th grade and taking Spanish 1A over the entire year or Spanish 1 A/B over the year?
If 1A is over the whole year, take/retake Spanish 1 A/B next year, she will end up in the same place. If she is taking 1 A/B this year, even if it doesn't go perfectly, push on to Spanish 2. If there is still a problem after the first time through Spanish 2, that is a better time to retake Spanish 2 and lose a year. |
| Spanish is a third language for my child and 1A was a good choice for sixth. She is now in 1B and is beginning to actually speak Spanish unprompted. She loved DuoLingo last year. |

I took Intro to Spanish in college and we had to watch these slightly hokey but ultimately useful videos. I even took an extra semester of Spanish because these videos helped me put the vocab together with the sentence structure in a meaningful way.

| OP here - Thanks for the fun and interesting suggestions for Spanish practice. I will look forward to suggesting them to my DD! |

| This is one of the few courses that uses a textbook. Of course students can't take it home to review or study (they do get a workbook they can take home). I searched online and bought a copy of the textbook so my ds has it at home to review and study. |
