13, 14 or 15, or more? every player pays to play would 50% minimum playing time (at least in guaranteed games) acceptable to most?

I would recommend 16-18 players because of more than 1 game per day and potential injuries. If you have concerns about managing the bench, you can ask some players to attend a specific game and give them more playing time in that particular game. Ultimately, if your team advances to later stages heavy legs become an issue so it is desirable to have a reasonable rotation. I coached a couple teams that advanced to the final without subs, but it is a big disadvantage in later stages.

+1. I would suggest at least 16 because odds are you will have 1 or 2 injured players during a tournament. In addition some kids may not be able to play both days or get sick for the second day.

Thanks PPs. Looks like we'd need to find several guest players to get to 16 or more. We do have a couple former players who're now playing in another league I could invite as guests - I suppose they'd pay the same $ like everyone else?

yes, guest players should also pay.

We never charge guest players....they are doing you a favor...

Yeah, if you need guest players in order to field a team I can't imagine asking them to pay. Also, be aware that some clubs do not allow their players to guest play outside of the club. The players would need to request their card from the club or manager so there's no way to avoid the club knowing. Also the guest players have to be carded with the right organization so find that out first.

I think 15 or 16 is probably about right, assuming about a 1 loss to injury or illness. 18 basically requires 50% of your team to swap out for each game, which disrupts the flow of the match and can be complicated to manage. 15/16 makes it easier to sub in all to play but not disrupt the chemistry as much.

I like 15 usually. Unless its middle school, where kids are more prone to injury due to growth.

This is a rec tournament so you can count that at least one or two players fail to show up or can only play one day

No more than 15 and what the heck are you guys doing that you expect to have 2 kids injured?

I think many clubs plan for an attrition rate of 1 out of 20 for planning purposes--one out of 20 will wake up with a fever, have an emergency family event, or some other thing that results in them canceling. If there is an injury than you more than likely will lose at least 1 kid if not 2.

What about playing time? What's a good or acceptable minimum, since everyone (excluding guest players) pays the same?

Bump. Thoughts on playing time?

Work out the total number of player minutes on the pitch and then divide by the number of players (excluding the GK if they don't rotate). Come up with a baseline number that is totally equal and then set a minimum that is no greater percentage lower than the percentage higher the 'best' players will be on the pitch. So if the average works out to 50 minutes (out of 70 total) then some kids will play no less than 40 and some will playing more than 60, or something like that.

Or, since it is rec, just go for a straight average.
