I'll be taking my 2 year old to get the H1N1 vaccine this weekend.
She got the seasonal flu vaccine via nasal spray, and had two days of fever and runny nose after it. (Duration was too short to be a cold, so I'm assuming it was reaction to the vaccine.) Will she get an injection or nasal spray for the H1N1 vaccine? Can I choose? We're going to one of the school clinics in DC, if that matters. Thanks. |
| It depends on when she got the flumist. There needs to be a waiting time between doses, even for different vaccines. The runny nose and fever are standard side effects fo the flu mist, so not a contraindication of the flumist for h1n1. |

I didn't know about the wait between vaccines... the ped didn't mention it. It will have been 9 days by the time we go for the H1N1 vaccine. How long should the delay be?
And I don't understand how there would reliably be a different reaction to the H1N1 mist than to the seasonal flu mist. It's the same delivery method of a live virus. Just a slightly different virus. 'Splain, please? |

PP here. Someone posted an article earlier in the thread on waiting period between flumist doses. It doesn't matter if its h1n1 or seasonal, there needs to be a wait, or one should be shot and one should be flumist. 9 days isn't long enough. It's weeks, but I don't remember how many.
The wait between flumists of any kind is different than the wait between dose 1 and dose 2 of the h1n1 (and dose 1 and dose 2 of the first seasonal flu vaccine ever for a child, which also needs to be two doses). Dose 1 and Dose 2 of each of those vaccines needs to be 28 days apart, from what I have been told. I would expect the reaction to a seasonal flumist to be the same as h1n1 flumist. |
4 weeks. |

I bumped the post that has this info in the attached article, but:
This answers the flumist/flumist waiting period questions. If we are talking about a child that needs two doses of at least h1n1, then you may want/need to get the shot. Alex., Va.: I have an appointment to get the regular flu shot on the 30th. How long will I need to wait to get the H1N1 (Hamthrax) vaccine? As a 44yo male with no health problems, should I even be worried about getting the vaccine? Andrew Pekosz: you can get the injected vaccine in any combination without worrying about a reduced immune response. you can also get one does of the nasal spray vaccine and one dose of the injectable vaccine without having to wait in between vaccinations. The only time you need to wait between vaccinations is if you are taking the nasal spray version of the seasonal and the 2009 H1N1 vaccine...then you should wait about 3 weeks between vaccinations. |
