Hi. My freshman is in a language class that the middle school teacher recommended and seemed fine at first but DC is increasingly lost and has had a string of bad grades that indicate to me what I suspected from the beginning - he's not ready for this level. Does anyone know the deadline for switching to the level below? And how does it work? Would he have to make up work from the lower-level class?
What happens grade-wise? Do his grades in the new class (if he can do that) start when he makes the move or is there somehow some kind of transfer of the grades from the other class? |
| You are past the point of doing anything for this quarter. There are only two more weeks. You can change his next quarter class. But if he does t at some point retake this class and get a better grade, the grade he gets for this quarter stands and remains on his transcript. |

Thanks!
Can you explain this:
Are you saying if he does NOT retake the class, the grade for the quarter stands? And so, if he DOES retake the class, how does it work since it would just be a quarter rather than a semester? Just to spell it out, if he switches from French 4 now to French 3 in the next quarter, would the semester grade this time just be the normal blend of those quarters and count as French 3? And then he'd continue with French 3B next semester, and take French 4 next year to replace this quarter's French 4 grade...? |
The quarter grade vanishes from a transcript perspective, if he switches classes for 2nd qtr. The teacher in 2nd quarter will have to decide what semester grade to give - you may want to discuss that prior to switching. |

Thanks! That's interesting that there's not a clear policy on what the semester grade would be.
Thanks, all! |
| In MCPS, any class dropped after 25 days of school (last Wednesday), ends up as a "withdrawal" on your transcript. Email your child's counselor and ask about options. |
| Thanks! |

I am not sure about details but you can for sure:
Stay in French 4A trough end of semester! Take French 3B next semester. Retake French 4A next year in 1 semester. Retakeing French 4A next year will erase grade for French 4A for this year. My child took French 2 twice in MS. Last grade stayed on transcript. |
| Call the counselor..I think middle school classes can be replaced but once you get to hs the class will stay on the transcript but the grade will not be in gpa. |

Reread: OPs FRESHMAN is in a class the MS counselor recommended.
Student is in HS, and cannot drop the class now without getting a withdraw on the permanent record (which may or may not be a big deal). |
There is not a specific policy because the circumstances for starting a course in the 2nd quarter vary from case to case. The grading system will only have one quarter grade instead of two, and cannot calculate a final semester grade without two. The teacher gets an error for submission in this case, and they have to "force" a final semester grade. If a student switches from another school and had a 1st quarter grade in the same course from the former school, the teacher will factor the two quarter grades together per the grading policy. If the course is a cumulative content type of course, the teacher may decide that the 2nd quarter assessments also reflect understanding of 1st quarter content and may use the 2nd quarter grade as a semester grade. If there was a level change (on-level to honors for example), the teacher may factor in the prior quarter's grade. If the course is not a cumulative content course, and the students has missed one or more entire quarter's worth of material, the student may get a final grade of "N" and not earn credit for the course. The student would need to retake the course for credit. |
