Cocktail attire--pantyhose, tights, or bare legs?

When you wear a cocktail-type dress in colder weather (November), what is the current style guideline? I have an event to attend in November and will be a wearing a black cocktail dress. I can either wear black pumps or a strappy black sandal. Obviously no hose, etc. if I go with the sandal, but do women still wear pantyhose (like a sheer black) or thin tights with pumps? One dress option comes right below the knee and another is just above. I have decent calves, but some spider veins (I'm 50).

First answer: All are acceptable these days. My preference is that by November I have put away my sandals for the season and tights are kind of daytime or just less dressy than a cocktail dress implies.

I wear panty hose all the time. I wear a lot of navy so usually wear nude but when I wear something in black or gray I love my off black panty hose, it gives a nice silhouette that is perfectly stylish.

I totally agree with the poster above. The key is to find nude hose that perfectly match your skin tone. I'm very pale, and the lightest shade of Donna Karan 'The Nudes' collection from Nordstrom is perfect for me.

Quality really makes a difference here - so no drugstore hose. I've also heard a lot of good things about Wolford brand.

Agree on both points. Good quality hose definitely improve the appearance of your legs. Bare legs and especially strappy sandals in autumn and winter in this area of the country are ridiculous. Everyone knows you're freezing and it's just not a good look.

It depends on your legs. I go to at least 5-8 black tie/cocktail events a month and only see hose on women over 65.

I would never wear strappy sandals this time of year. I went to a black tie event last night. I didn't wear hose, but had on velvet Louboutin pumps. Fabulous. I put baby oil on my legs. Hose? Hahahaha.

I'm 54 and wear hose (I like Wolford) in the winter to those events - keeps me warm and looks better.

You need hose with a cocktail dress. Tights are a little too casual. Definitely not bare legs. That's just too tacky for words.

If you are freezing--you won't look good. Wear the hose. Same for shoes. If your feet hurt, you won't look good.
