Thinking about second opinion

Anonymous
I'm new to the boards. We've been TTC for 10 months - with two early miscarriages in that time (less than 6 weeks). We've been working with Dr. Sacks at Columbia Fertility Associates since July - we've been told that we have poor sperm morphology (5%) and two slight blood clotting issues (heterozygous prothrombin gene mutation and MTHFR). HSG and all other lab work thankfully clear - ovulation is not a problem. Before we move to Clomid & IUI (per Dr. Sacks recommendation), I'm thinking about getting a second opinion. I would welcome any suggestions. Thank you!

I have heard great things about Dr. Sacks. He recently helped a friend of mine get pregnant after she had a couple of unsuccessful cycles at another clinic. I see Dr. Widra at Shady Grove (DC office) and really like him. Though I have not gotten pregnant (yet!), I have a lot of confidence in him and he has been very compassionate.

Just curious why with a sperm issue you wouldn't go for IVF with ICSI? I also used Sacks at CF and he is wonderful--got pg thru IVF and ICSI.

In general, I think it's always good to get a second opinion -- if only to make you feel more secure in your choice. For example, I got over-supressed when I was on the long lupron protocol during my first IVF. It made me feel better to know that two different REs (one at SG and one at GW) had both recommended that protocol, so it was probably just bad luck that it didn't work and was not a reflection of a poor choice by my RE. That said, I would ask Dr Sacks why he is going with clomid/IUI with male factor. Is it because of your insurance? Good luck!!!

i agree...i wouldn't take the time for clomid/iui. maybe yes, try 2nd opinion. you could always do a clomid iui cycle w/ your current doctor and then in the mean time make an appointment for a consult eslewhere. sometimes it takes a few weeks to get an appointment....
