Hard to know what "lesser-known" would be. I like By the Book, 99% Invisible (about how design affects your life in ways you don't even know), Backstory (giving the little known historical backstories to various current issues, both fluffy (beaches) and not (court nominations); I second Hidden Brain; I also enjoy Still Processing (NYT culture podcast).

The Birth Hour is a podcast of women telling their birth stories. If you are still procreating or interested in childbirth for other reasons, it's slightly addicting.

I just got through Dr. Death which was scary in the sense that "it could happen to you." But it was well done.

The Dave Chang Show is really good. He’s the owner of Momofoku and talks about food and pop culture. I also like the Rewatchables, which analyzes older movies that show on cable all the time, think Good Will Hunting.
