Family was watching the movie Holes (it's really good, if you haven't seen it) and my 13 year old DD said, I LOVE stories that have a connection wit the past and present, I just got chills when [you figure out how the two stories are related in Holes].
It made me think there are a lot of books that do this really well - Possession by A.S. Byatt is one famous example - but all the ones I can think of are adult books. Any ideas for fun (young) teenage girl books that utilize this story-telling framing devise? |
| When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead |

I don't think these are exactly what you're looking for, but these books deal with past & present with interesting female protagonists and plots with a twist.
We Were Liars by e. lockhart Code Name Verity Would she like The Joy Luck Club? |

Charlotte Sometimes (Penelope Farmer)
Time Travelers Never Die (Jack McDevitt) Doomsday Book (Connie Willis) To Say Nothng of the Dog (Connie Willis) A Swiftly Tilting Planet (Madeleine L’Engle) The Girl From Everywhere (Heidi Heilig) |
| Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick |

Jennifer Donnelly, Revolution
Alan Garner, Red Shift Alison Uttley, A Traveller in Time I also recommend the Connie Wills books. The Doomsday Book, in particular, has a past and present plotline that are both running at the same time. |

Revolution is a very good YA book with intertwining modern and 18th century timelines in Paris.
Note that the modern protagonist is depressed at the opening of the book so it starts out a little dark but not inappropriate for a 13 yo. |
| Not sure if it meets your criteria, but check out The Buried Giant |

I love the Chronicles of St. Mary's - it's not about time travel, it's historians investigating major historical events in contemporary time.

| Chasing Redbird by Sharon Creech. Not intertwined but very much about the past and present interacting, and a bit mysterious. Perfectly age appropriate too. Creech writes amazing tween/young teen girl protagonists. |
| Not ure how it compares to the book, but Fried Green Tomatoes is an exceptional movie that ties together the past and present. |
| Not a book, but Tom Stoppard's "Arcadia" would probably be a hit (young female protagonist, historically intertwined plot lines) if you have the opportunity to see a production. |
| Kindred by Octavia Butler. Excellent read. I am an English teacher and the 10th grade English classes are reading this at my school this year for their unit on science fiction (it involves time travel). |
I just read this and thought it was great. Not for a fun young teenage read though, as OP is looking for. |
