DC code mandates student CPR training - is it happening?

CM Mary Cheh tried and failed to find out just how many DCPS students are getting CPR/AED training as mandated by a 2016 law. Charter schools have the same requirement - but it's been challenging to get any numbers or clear answers. Here's a story we aired Monday: https://wjla.com/features/7-on-your-side/dc-law-mandating-cpr-training-followed

This does not seem like a great use of instructional time to me. Glad it isn’t being implemented.

There are real problems in DC.

Is that article correct - they were teaching 5th graders how to do cpr? That does not seem right. I don't really agree that every high school student needs to know how to do CPR. School nurses and PE teachers - yes that seems obvious.

CPR is taught to youngsters who enroll in a Red Cross babysitting class.

But I’d definitely prefer to make this mandate apply to teachers and staff.

Is that code in place so they can remove school nurses?

Probably. Most are part time now as it is. “Care” in a first aid way at our school is getting a call to pick up your student.

The training is a graduation requirement for high school seniors. The training for 5th graders was more for exposure and was set up by one of the children's parents. After talking to both DCPS and PCSB, the CPR requirement appears to be an unfunded mandate of sorts.

How are they doing with the required healthy foods mandate? Or recess requirements?

How are they doing with fixing bathrooms?

CPR as a graduation requirement seems profoundly dumb.

On a related note, I was at a meeting this morning with a Wilson counselor, and she commented that 90% of her juniors have completed no community service. To be honest, to the extent that community service requirements might keep kids from graduating, that also seems like a dumb mandate.
